CC : Durham vs Sussex

Another great day for Durham. Even though we've been doing it almost all season I still am coming to terms with the almost ease in which we achieve maximum batting points. Every time we seem to be in a spot of bother ie the first session yesterday we just move up a gear. At the end of that final session ,where we batted superbly, the Sussex players looked utterly crushed.

Great ton from Clarky (it was clear he didnt want to wait until tomorrow) and excellent contributions from de Leede, Robinson and Borthwick.

As for Lees...Well he's moving into Di Venuto legendary territory now- arguably he's there already.:D

Let's bat on tomorrow (as the weather is set fair) and grind Sussex into the dirt then get at them.

What a red ball season it's been.

Looking at the other scores and pretty much nodoby has picked up many batting points in this round so if we do that (which we should easily from here), we further chip away at the required total. 500+ puts us in a brilliant position to take max points from this game and all but seal the title.

We have taken more batting points in this round than the rest of the league put together and we can still get another one.

Cracking performance. To be honest it’s feeling like a procession now. This team is going up as champions and we’re just watching them tick the boxes off. Great to see but lacking the possibility of loss that makes sport fun really.

I might get a few pelters for this but I’m 60 so I’m too old to care. Think I’ll do Scarborough tomorrow. I live down there now, I don’t have the same local pettiness for cricket that I have for football, and I grew up in NYSD territory anyway when Durham were still a minor county so Scarborough with the old fellah was always a thing. And where I live now it’s easier on the train so I can booze for the day. The one thing he deffo wouldn’t approve of is paying money for one when I have a membership for the other. But there you go. Can’t win ‘em all.

Been an absolute pleasure following this team this year.

It has like 👍

I think I’ve found myself thinking every single game “we’re bound to have an off day sooner or later.” Especially when facing deficits in games where we bat second - I’m thinking this game, Derbyshire away and Gloucestershire at home in particular, but then every single time we just seem to cruise past the opposition in an almost effortless fashion. Every game it seems like the opposing bowlers and fielders simply aren’t up for the fight.

The gulf in class between us and the rest (TO THIS POINT) has been absolutely staggering. Even the game down at Sussex, we were considerably better than they were for two and a half days and we only lost it because we tried to force a win where most teams would’ve settled for a draw. That set the tone for what has followed and not a single team have been able to live with us.

We’re so nearly there, I’m willing to go as far as to say that even if we only draw this game we are an absolute certainty to be promoted, even if we have a capitulation of Devon Loch-like proportions in the last two games. Obviously the lads want the title though and I think nothing less than that in their eyes would constitute some kind of failure. Win this one though and you can start the party, my only regret is not following my gut back in April and lumping on us to win the title.

F*CKING HA’WAY DURHAM

Some staggering stats have been achieved this year by the lads, we move onto 46 batting bonus points if we get to 450 in the morning, which is 19 points better than the next highest scorers (Sussex).
CC D2 Table after Day 2
  • Durham - 181 - (Max points achievable 246)
  • Worcs - 138 - (Max points achievable 202)
  • Glamorgan - 123 - (Max points achievable 187)
  • Sussex - 115 - (Max points achievable 204)
  • Leics - 114 - (Max points achievable 202)

  • Note, if Durham win, their points total will go to 197/198 depending on the 5th batting point. Sussex’ points total will go to 115/116/117 depending on the 2nd + 3rd bowling point. Their max points available will be 187/188/189. Meaning they can not overtake Durham.
  • Note, Glamorgan can no longer overtake Durham if they lose. However, if Glamorgan win, neither Glam or Worcs can overtake us.
SUMMARY
If Durham win and Glamorgan win, Durham will be promoted

Given that Glamorgan took 7 wickets for 40 runs to Close a day where Worcestershire looked to be building an unassailable lead that game has suddenly been thrust back into the balance
-
To expand on what I said above, if we win and Glamorgan win, we’re as good as champions and I’m willing to call it. Not mathematically, but nobody is catching us*. Not a chance.

*points deductions aside

And to think he’d only played a handful of red ball games before he arrived. Excellent stuff 😁
He had 2 FC innings before this season.

Got 5 and 56* against Namibia. So in his first 7 knocks in red ball he's scored 4 half centuries.

Hopefully he converts tomorrow and makes that 1 ton and 3 halfs.

Dear Durham

50 point penalty for the ice cream van clearing off early for two successive days.
25 point penalty for coffee van not being there yesterday.
50 point penalty for allowing 4 members of the groundstaff to spend most of the day sitting in the Trapdoor today
10 point penalty for the bloke on the mic. announcing Robinson had scored a hundred.
50 point penalty for not giving opponents a chance.
20 point penalty for it being unseasonably warm for September at the North Pole...er..Chester le Street.

That'll fettle you Northern oiks!
Yours etc
The ECB

Err I was saying he should be in the first XI when he was hitting regular hundreds opening for the seconds.

Giving Robinson a run for his money as signing of the season imo. He's only 23 or summat

Think your second statement destroys the first like. I like baz as much as the next man but ollie robinson has been a class above all but lees
25 point penalty for coffee van not being there yesterday.
Ill not have a bad word said about my mate in the coffee van. I bought a cup of coffee despite it being hotter than the inside of a chicken balti pie today just so i could have a little catch up so if you or anyone at FTECB want to complain about her ill fight you and the durham donkey that you rode in on 🤬

Many a true word spoken in jest 😁

Absolutely class. Roll on next season
It’ll be a big step up in quality next season, but I remind myself that for years and years the counties were completely unable to relegate us and had to rely on the ECB to do the job for them

even when we lost the first umpteen games in 2012 (was it?) and sat bottom of the table miles adrift.

***MAXIMUM BONUS POINTS***

7th time this season we’ve reached that figure.

450-5 (105 overs). Lead is 184.

Clark 107*
de Leede 90*

Partnership is 185.

What do people think we should declare on? A score or a time?

BdL wants it, you can tell. Is this his highest score? Go on son

Time, I reckon. Throw the bat, get out the long handle and score as many we can. We might need plenty of time to winkle out pujara. I can’t see him throwing it away like he did on Sunday

I think maybe a time and would maybe go for mid afternoon assuming we don't get skittled first. We would be maybe 300 ahead by then anyway.
