Russell Martin has Ross Stewart as his main target **Transfer confirmed **

There are three parties involved in this. Each will be potentially briefing different things.

I’d put money on him signing

They all want the same outcome here though. Doesn't make any sense for anyone to brief that the deal has collapsed. Someone's been spooked - whether it was just a panic or there was something actually in it, we will probably never know.

I agree, I think it will happen because there's no point in anyone denying it if it had actually fell through.

An injured player who’s due back this month, with us in a better position to negotiate his contract.

Not sure how we'd be in a more favourable position at all.

If he doesn't go today it's all but confirmed we won't get a fee for him unless he signs a new contract. It's still a massive risk to offer him a new contract as his injury could easily be reoccuring. I doubt we'll be in a rush to offer him any sort of contract and I doubt he'd be in a rush to accept given he knows he can get better elsewhere.

There's no guarantee he'll even be the same player after barely playing football for a year, so if he doesn't get injured is he still going to perform as well?

He's also had his head set on moving clubs - does he even want to be here? Will he have the same the same standards/workrate as he did previously if he's not arsed?

That's purely focusing on Stewart too, nevermind the other transfers that it could effect if the deal doesn't go through.

Genuinely struggling to see the positive. Missed out on £10m and have a potentially injury prone player that potentially doesn't want to be here. Might have missed out on other transfers that the fee could have been used for.

Current state of play as far as I know:Stewart: Deal hit a snag and in some doubt but expectation is that it still goes ahead.Roberts: Still no deal agreed. May well not be now.Embleton: Off to Derby on loan.Batth: Likely moving to Cardiff

If it doesn’t go through, he is fucked really. He will be 3 or 4th choice with little chance of football.

Even if he is fit by January, clubs are hardly going to be fighting over someone that has hardly kicked a ball in a year
It would be shite for us financially but it would be funny seeing someone who has pissed us about until the last possible moment being stuck in limbo

I’m passed caring

please don’t misunderstand this post and it’s not intended to annoy. It’s a personal feeling which I hope others don’t misconstrue as critism of safc and their support of the club

I find it strange that RS is generally accepted as one of the best no 9s in the league when fit yet he’s never had a kick for Scotland ahead of Che Adams and Lyndon Dykes. 🤷🏻‍♂️
He had only proven himself as a league one footballer at a time when Adams and dykes were performing well at least one league above that. Stewart then started scoring goals in the championship, got recognised by Scotland and then got injured so couldn't shift Adams or Dykes while he had a serious injury. Quite straightforward really.

To be fair, I don’t really disagree with any of that.

I do think if it falls through on medical grounds it’s because Southampton won’t want to take the risk with a 10m transfer fee. Whereas we’ve obviously taken a different view, having monitored his progress and fitness for months.

But you’re right about the potential for him to leave for nothing.

It’s a risk, but realistically, there’s nothing anyone can do to change the outcome now. We’ve just got to let it play out.
