Russell Martin has Ross Stewart as his main target **Transfer confirmed **

So given that they’re not mugs, they won’t be paying over the odds and we should have no issue matching their offer.

Phew. Thanks for that. That’s reassuring.
ho0w can we maytch their offer? they operate in a different market...the market of teams with parachute money..

the issue for SAFC competing with southampton is they have loads more money...SAFC cant magic cach out of thin air..neior can southampton..but southampton dont need to magic it..they have £150mn in the back from player sales..

they havent yet shown they are good at buying players...

For the avoidance of doubt. I agree that if Southampton offer us £150m for Ross Stewart we should take it.

On the other hand, if we lose him to another team at our own level, on account of us not being willing to match what would be - for the upteenth time, by definition - market value wages, then I (and I suspect most other supporters) will have an altogether different view.

southampton arent on safcs level financially and operate in a different market when paying wages.
If SAFC lost stewart to a club without parachute money, I would agree outrage would be due..but those teams are spedning even less than SAFC this summer..so thats unlikely..

No they don’t operate in a different market. They operate in the championship market, recruiting what are - again, by f***ing definition - championship players.

You yourself have just now declared Southampton to be “no mugs”, so the idea that they are about to start offering double what they themselves think a players true value is, is a nonsense. They’ll offer him what they assess him as being worth. As a championship player playing for a championship Southampton, in the championship. The championship market rate for Ross Stewart, as set by, in this scenario, Southampton.

And once again - if we lose our best and most important player to another championship club, because we refuse to pay him championship wages (even though we would not be paying a fee for him), then people will make their own minds up about what that means. I think I know what most people will make of it.

one club doesnt set the market rate..
SAFC didnt set the market rate for will grigg in league one...they paid that fee for him in league one...that didnt mean it was the market rate..because the market rate is the rate someone else will pay..
Southampton wont pay over the odds for ross stewart.they will pay what he is worth to a championship team with parachute money...SAFC arent active in that market...

Jesus wept.

I see the apologists really are working over hard to roll this pitch for the club. You must really think this rumour has legs.

If they've pocketed that much from player sales - they were obviously good at recruitment.

You’re going on as though every club in the championship has the same budget, they don’t.
There are levels within the division with 3 relegated clubs way ahead due to parachute money and sales of high value players.
Then there’s a couple of teams who have sold players for big money.
Then there’s us with the biggest crowds.
Southampton offering one of our players more than we can afford is the same as us being able to offer more than say Rotherham for one of their players.

I suspect you know this though and are just trolling the thread.

This particular journo seems to get a lot of stories about players moving on or being “disgruntled” with no actual quotes from anyone. I’d say it’s likely he’s become the go-to blogger for agents working their ticket.

I’ve assumed for ages that come the last 2 days of the window he’ll be off somewhere for around 5m. Why are some getting upset, everything has pointed to this for months?

I bet those getting upset are a lot of the same people that have been constantly spamming that nobody will buy him when injured and hasn’t proved his fitness/won’t pass a medical as well.

The worry for me is our long term inability to sign a replacement in that position. If he goes and we swap him for a belter so be it but it’s not something we do well

£5m+ and he's gone.
We're not going to match Southamptons wages (nor should we after two serious injuries) the problem is who we get in.

Mayenda (not ready/injured)
Hemir (not ready)
Rusyn (not yet signed/injured)

It's a bit of a clusterfuck really.
The next few days are going to be huge.
Mayenda is apparently back in a couple of weeks. Rusyn has a minor injury. We have a two week international break coming up. Stewart is also injured.

By the time we play our first game after this weekend we may well have three/four strikers vying for one spot....and quite possibly RS still to come back.

Let's see where we stand when the window is closed.

Russell Martin, hope he takes as long over this transfer as his team does to make a forward pass

Anyway problem is never selling players it’s getting the right price at the right time which allows the club to invest and replace with someone who ultimately performs better than the person leaving.

This lot have made some good moves in the market but this is in a position where we know it is a tough market…..going to be an interesting few days that will have a big impact on our season 😬

This has rumbled on for far too long, I think I’d just cut my losses and get rid now. It’s blatantly obvious he doesn’t want to sign a new contract, and after two serious injuries who knows what he’s even going to be like when he comes back.

That Achilles injury makes me worry. If he doesn’t want to be here anymore, thanks for the memories Ross but don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.
