The End of the 16.4?

It’s simply NOT “the best against the best “ which Rob Key and others like to spout

it’s so called new additions are just exactly the early days of the T20 , miked up players, bands etc

all they had to do was allow England players to play and the crowds would have risen

it was that simple and to crowbar The Ashes aside for this heap of manure is classic of executives who are clueless about cricket fans

matter of time before it’s redundant

Ashes wasn’t crow-barred aside. We still got five tests and it avoided a clash with the PL. Nowt to beat the Hundred for there.

People wishing for cold September tests when most of the country has moved into football mode… how is that better than June?

Five tests in five weeks is crowbarred imo

tests v Australia were played for a 100 years in July and august

what happened to change that ? An unwanted competition highlighting overseas T20 mercenaries who will offer zero back to develop or inspire future kids to play test match cricket

its not the best v the best, it’s the leftover dregs from the USA and Caribbean t20

nobody wants September tests, just tests in the traditional period of July and august

stick the 16.4 then

I get that. But back the point, why was late Aug/ Sep better than mid-June?

To me those dates were loads worse and they’ve picked the perfect 7 week block for this series. I know plenty of people who’ve watched the Ashes cos it wasn’t competing against Arsenal v Man Utd.

July and August were the main test series for over a 100 years

now the ashes is squeezed into a five week period to accomadate the totally not needed hundred. Both teams were full of injured players unable to rest during the series

Youve ignored my other point about this NOT BEING THE BEST V THE BEST

im sorry NCB but we will never agree on this and tonight we have the NORTHERN team playing in front of a half empty headingley

its cringeworthy to keep this competition and the sooner it’s gone the better

all it is is exactly how the T20 was at the outset

this is the FTECB trying to promote cricket at test playing grounds only and so against the principle of spreading the game , as it’s targeting places with test grounds only

last night the welsh game was played in front of about 2000 people. The message is not spreading there

tonight it looks like around 5000 , message is not spreading here either

I’ve had my say and that’s it for me

I agree with you on the Hundred in the main. Just not the point about August being a good month, which is why I asked you on it. June was much better. June has been used loads of times over the past 100 years too btw.

The whole of august peak summer is given to this competition and the tv coverage

they ignore a competition England are world champs in and again , I’ll say this THIS IS NOT THE BEST V BEST

it’s an afterthought and the Caribbean and American t20s take precedent

it’s a waste of money which could be given to counties to upgrade the tv coverage of the other events which would lead to more interest

this is just a dying competition that nowhere else in the world wants to play

it’s a hangover of a vanity project by previous administration of the FTECB

the atmosphere at headingley is dead ,

and that’s my last word

Not sure why you’ve posted that mate. My point was about something different.

I agree the Hundred is poor.

Mate, the entire Test summer was done before August began so that the 16.4 could occupy ‘prime’ position in the school holidays.

That’s an indisputable fact.

This years Ashes was done and dusted before the 2019 Ashes had even started.
I agree with you on the Hundred in the main. Just not the point about August being a good month

School holidays are in August, not June.

Think we are potentially confusing two issues.

The Ashes was condensed into just under seven weeks (not five) with two pairs of back to backs, as it has been every time since 2005, because no country can be arsed to do proper tours any more and this is the minimum spacing currently allowed. That wasn’t changed for, and ain’t changing whatever happens to, our domestic programme.

Shifting it to June/July was new and I am pretty sure was intended to benefit the hundred, although in practice it appears to have ended up being mainly to give the England players a chance to work on their golf handicaps before the ODI warm ups start.

I get what you're saying but I don't think it will have had much impact as you think. Football is only 90 minutes so there's still plenty of time for casual fans to tune into the test match outside of that.

A far bigger factor to drawing the casual fan in would be having the test matches on free to air. We saw that in 2005. Sadly money means those days are long gone though.

Dan Norcross on the latest episode of The Final Word podcast unwittingly explaining just how ridiculous a format the 16.4 is. Really get the feeling he thinks it’s as shit as we do.

Listen to the first 5/6 minutes.

That sounds utterly ridiculous

So 18 teams is too many but lets have 39 instead.

I never get any luck using paywall jumping sites on the cricketer. So will just have to go off the header on that one.
