England & Aus docked points

Ben Stokes' side did not bowl at the required rate in four of the five Tests and have lost 19 of the 28 points they won for two wins and a draw.

Australia have lost 10 points for a slow over rate in the fourth Test.

England and Australia players have also been fined 5% of their match fee for each point lost

Teams are docked a point for each over they are short. England have lost two points for two missing overs at Edgbaston, nine from the Lord's Test, three for Old Trafford and five for The Oval.

That seems a bit extreme, losing what nearly three quarters of the points you gained during the series.

England's over rate has been embarrassing for years and they are not remotely interested in doing anything about it. If the ECB had to refund punters the money for the overs lost in a day's play, it would stop it overnight. I have no doubt about that at all. In a day and age where almost all tickets are paid for online by card, a refund would be a very simple thing to do.

I’m sorry like but that is absolutely ridiculous. Yes over rates need to improve but it’s a lot different in England trying to get 90 overs in a day when you’ve got DRS, ball changes and whatever else along with spin barely playing a part most of the time. Then you have bowlers with huge run ups like Starc and Wood bowling their knackers off so of course it’s going to take a while to get through the overs sometimes.

The WTC final is going to be between India and Pakistan on the basis of them bowling 80 overs of spin every home series they play.

Whilst I agree something needed (and still needs) to be done, this is bollocks.

The over rate penalty only affects innings over 80 overs - England were usually bowled out by that point, or of course declaring. Yet the Aussies were still well behind the over rate, so have basically got off lighter due to Englands positive (and riskier) batting.

It's not difficult at all. They manage 96 a day in county cricket no problem. Keep them out until they're done. Both teams should have equal punishment here though.
