5th test the oval

Anderson average this series is 76.75. Only scott boland is worse.
Root has the same amount of wickets as him but at 28.25...
Stokes has one less wicket than him and he's only bowled 29 overs.
Josh tounge has take 5 wickets at 30 (in one game) and robinson has 10 at 28.4.
He is the most economical at 2.69
But robinson is next at 2.77
Tounge is least economical of our seam bowlers at 3.6 with broad slightly ahead of him at 3.58

Fair bit of rain forecast over the 5 days with Monday looking like a washout, subject to change as usual but doesn't look to good.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I'm saying it's ridiculous that he's been picked for this test in front of Tongue, he looks short of form to me.

I'd assumed the decision to pick him was based on him calling it quits so he could have a farewell test (not that I'd agree with that either mind)

Hopefully he'll take 7 for 25 tomorrow

Pointless exercise now really isn't it?

Shame there was the opportunity for a deciding 5th test that could have been broadcast on terrestrial telly to sell test cricket to a bigger audience, now we've got a damp squib that changes nothing.
Not at all.
Australia REALLY want to win the series…..so will chase the win or draw. Their media will not allow anything less.
England REALLY don’t want to lose the series.…so will be desperate to win the match to make it 2-2.

The Ashes may have been retained, but both sets of players have plenty to play for.

All factually correct but it doesn’t prove much imo. Anderson hasnt been at his best but has had 7 catches dropped off him throughout the series and 4 months ago was ranked number one bowler in the world. There’s no sentiment involved here they are picking the best team that they think will win the test and picking a fast bowler with more test wickets than anyone else in history is the direction they have chosen.

Jimmy has a poor record at the Oval, a flat wicket with no reverse swing on offer so not a great surprise. He should not have played at Old Trafford nor should he be playing at the Oval. However, he should be first name on the for the first test in India

Stokes is picking his mates as he has done all series. Due to the state English test cricket was in when Baz and Stokes took over they wont get sacked if we lose 3-1 as I expect us to (playing 3 x 79-85mph at the Oval wont cut it). However, get walloped in Australia both will be gone

"they think"- as a knowledgeable poster lets cut the cr*p, Stokes is picking the side in the singular sense and is mate picking ala Ali, Bairstow and Jimmy

Bairstow had one of the best summers by an English player last summer, you honest think that at elite level sport they just pick people who are there friends rather than who will make us more likely to win.

Are you telling me a three man selection panel did not know that Bairstow was lacking cricket to play the first two tests? It would have been apparent to anyone around the team he needed a couple more 4 day games for Yorkshire

In regards to your question, if one person is picking this side yes he was picked as he is Stokes mate. A three man selection panel would have questioned it and told Stokes to leave him out for the first two tests. When a PL footballer comes back after an ACL then don't play 90mins from the off, same principle. Managers pick football sides not the captain like the England test side

He had a few games for Yorkshire by the way weren't they playing 20-20 when ashes started

Ali (for better or worse) is England’s best fit spinner and his 54 at Old Trafford means that he was always going to hold on to the number 3 spot.
Bairstow kept wicket much better at OT (certainly better than Carey, for instance, did in that match) and his 99 not out was spectacular. He was NEVER getting dropped….and nor should he.
Anderson has started showing that time is catching up with him and personally I would have chosen Tongue over him at the Oval.

Your VERY thinly hidden dislike of the BazBall way really shines through.

We have only lost 3 of our last 15 test matches and could easily have won all 15. We have that record playing some tremendous stuff yet You talk as if this is the death of English cricket. Give yourself a shake man
