Sunderland railway station.

The LNER train up to Boro, returns empty to the Heaton depot using the Durham Coast line.
A very clear example where a service could run in service rather than ECS. Can only think that crew are out of hours or are lodging in Middlesbrough. Or to be fair, they didn't think there was a business case. Or Northern would object.

I can't understand people on here banging on about a hub and spoke model with Sunderland having to use Newcastle as the hub and using the metro to connect. If the metro service went all the way to the Middlesbrough could work but it doesn't. On a match day, people are piling on the train at Hartlepool, Horden and then either rammed at Seaham or don't even stop. With the metro taking all the slots, on a match day I know lads from Seaham who have given up on the rail service as they can't rely on it as the metro service they can't use, stops additional trains.



This is about airlines but the logic regarding point to point applies equally to rail networks and why the hub and spoke model is falling out of favour.

People on this thread doing sunderland down and talking about a hub further north are nit from Sunderland and likely actively hate the place. Many post on pf and are mags. Sunderland as a place has to fight for everything not just against those in power but also against those further north who see us as a threat.

It's not really a fair comparison flights and trains unless you had an unlimited money pot.

Flights can fly anywhere without any obstacles. Trains can only go where the tracks take them.

Sunderland is on a local line and Newcastle is on the mainline that's the reason. It's nothing to do with people being scared like others have suggested.

On the weekend the last metro is 23::17 to sunderland, is this replicated all over the country?
Later than most I’d say from experience. Unless you’re in London.

My biggest bugbear is the number of times the 05:39 LNER train from Sunderland to Kings across via Newcastle is cancelled, yet still runs from Newcastle. Pretty sure it’s because I’m the only person on it.

As a passenger train it would have to run to a timetable and staff would have to be provided to clean it at the end of its journey. The Durham Coast line would also need to be included in the LNER franchise. As an ECS train it probably doesn't have a guard and can run whenever it is ready or be diverted over another route.

Overnight trains were axed on the ECML in about 1988 and services such as the local service Newcastle - Chathill - Berwick were reduced to a couple of trains a day because actually closing the stations would be too costly.

And we are returning to the last few years of BR under this current government. The railway is being run down in managed decline. I’ve been on footplate for 36 years starting as a traction trainee in 1987. I’ve never known it like this.

None of it open yet but I'll not be too long before the revamp is completed.

There are plans for work on the platforms but I don't think it's been announced when they're likely to start
 
The other day the lighting was on inside so must be pretty close to opening .

At least announce who is taking the units so there can start fitting
 
The high solid wood external fencing has now been removed and replaced with a much more pleasing to the eye metal cage effect!

Another sign perhaps that it won't be too long before Job is finished.
