Blast Quarter Finals

Another example of the ECB undermining the competition with only two of the quarter finals being televised because three of them are on Friday.

In the past they've either been on four different days or two at the very least to ensure they could all be televised.

I do think there needs to be a little bit rethink and reward league performances like in the IPL where the top 2 have a second chance.

For example Somerset have won 12 of their 14 matches, don’t think that ever been done, which is an astonishing performance, yet could miss out of finals day if they lose their quarter final.

Think after a 14 game season the top team from each group should go straight to finals day imo

ECB still trying to force the shitty Hundred on all. They have failed miserably, not a patch T20. Nobody outside of England interested with another format of the game. I went to the T20 finals day last year, tremendous entertainment and day out.

T20 always been brilliant entertainment mate, tournaments like the blast and IPL great watch.

Bet finals day was great mate

The Ashes has been squeezed into 45 days, the CC and 50 over comps marginalised, the Blast vandalised. And all for a competition nobody wants and that excludes half the country.

We tried to warn everyone, blame the people who supported the 16.4 in the first place.
The Ashes has been squeezed into fewer than 50 days with two back to back every time since 2009. Even 2001 and 2005 had one back to back. Got to go back to the last century for anything approaching a traditional tour. Finishing before July is the new bit for the you know what.

I’m there this year having been several times as a neutral but this’ll be the first since Covid. It’s a cracking day out.

Yep, those 3-5 extra rest days between games are a big loss. Basically one day between each game lost.

And played when no school kids can attend. Heartbreaking what they're doing to our game.

I’m not meaning to be picky so I’ll apologise in advance if I come across as that but that’s not really what happened. The first back to back tests in England at the beginning of the century were seven days apart. It’s the ICC rules that have made them a minimum of three rest days between (and left it impossible to have the Sydney test on New Year’s Day).

And when we had two weeks between each Thursday start, it wasn’t for a rest, they played a county match.

No argument at all there.

No worries chief, pick away!

It's been 47/8/9 days in the past, so around a day extra between games. Yeah, there's usually at least one back to back but you'd have bigger breaks before and after. Not going to help that these hard tracks are going to make for 5 day games in most cases, there'll be no 3 day kicking in this series.

Anyway, I've taken this thread off track a bit (Didnt meant to)

Not televising the Blast QFs: Absolute shit show.

Yep. That's the cause. It's an absolute disgrace what they've done in pursuit of pushing something nobody wanted.

Although domestic cricket is what has suffered most, its also affecting the national team. The pinnacle of men's test cricket is being played in this country this summer and it's all going to be finished before August, one of if not the prime cricket playing month, has started.

I love the Blast. I have been to five of the last ten finals days that were allowed crowds and I’m going this year even though it’s about a hundred notes. But it still isn’t a world class tournament. The eighteen franchises do spread the talent too thin. We can’t be completely in denial about that.

On the flip side it’s being played when four of the tests are free from a clash with the Premier League, which cricket really needs. And no daft games in September when the weather can turn. Playing Ashes tests in June was common in the 90s and I’m glad they’re back. On balance I think it’s a better slot for it now.

Squeezed test series’ are a consequence of short form cricket all around the world, not just the 16.4.

I was open minded about the Hundred (but less keen on it now) but it shouldn’t be blamed for everything. I totally agree with the OP’s point though that having the Blast Quarter Finals on consecutive nights was class, and the 16.4 is cannabalising it.

Eighteen franchises?

Warwickshire
Surrey (can't rule out lancs though, but this one just looks the most likely to break the home teams winning pattern)
Somerset
Hampshire
