I suppose it depends what you class as encouragement, I thought you meant the agent or Clarke were asking Burnley to keep bidding and we’d accept - which makes it look like they want to leave. That’s what I don’t agree with (if that’s what you meant as encouragement).

If you just meant that Clarke and his agent aren’t telling Burnley to bugger off and are just silently getting on with it, then I agree.

Nah I don't think they're actively telling them to bid. But it suits them for Burnley to bid... even for a new deal here.

I dont think he will leave though. I don't think Burnley will pay what we want and I think the agent will use these bids to say if we reject 15m quid then Clarke should be paid like a £15m player on a new deal.

I agree with you. You see it on almost every big deal now ‘personal terms were agreed weeks ago’ when a fee is finally agreed. It’s always gone on but now clubs and agents don’t even bother hiding tapping up anymore.

That’s not to say that Clarke is agitating for a move. They may be encouraging Burnley’s interest to strengthen his own hand in negotiations to get a better deal for himself here.

Ian harte came out weeks ago saying Clarke was happy but there's a fee for ever player etc. There was no need for him to pop up and say it and somebody else got dogs abuse on here for posting that opinion but he was right.

I think the agent will welcome the bids as it strengthens his hand with Burnley and Sunderland no matter what happens.

I just think it's a little naïve to think that this sort of thing doesn't go on. That Burnley would bother wasting weeks bidding for the player without at least having some dialogue with Harte, then to carry on bidding suggests they're not being told 'no chance'. Whether that's because Clarke would be interested in the move or because he and Harte are using Burnley for their own means would be anyone's guess.

The club have probably told them the valuation and they’re trying their luck before eventually meeting it, or f***ing off I hope.

I think it’s a shite move for him, personally, but if a £20m bid comes in I think he’ll be gone.
 
If Burnley try this approach with all their targets, they'll be lucky to get many in by the end of the window.

It looks to me like their valuation of Clarke is way lower than ours, and they're pissing in the wind.

Where does that even happen these days? Players crack on and leave stuff to their agent. I highly doubt any player or agent tells another club they’re not interested.

It’ll be a case of until a bid accepted he’s concentrating on his football. It’s a case of we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. That’s the way it works.
