It must suck to be a drinker living in any other part of Sunderland these days. All these estates with their one pub that’s been turned into an Italians and the Riviera is opening pubs and breweries like there’s no tomorrow.

Most of them don't even have that now. Pennywell had 3 pubs and 2 clubs on the estate when I was a lad. Doesn't have any now (Comrades is just ower the border in South Hylton).

Nah. It was just set up by people from Pennywell and that land was available. Tbf the original Penny Well that the area was named after was where Greenbank Drive is now.

My initial experience of the Mortal Hound when I had a pint in the Queen Vic wasn't very positive, in fact it was manky and I left it....I hope it was just a dodgy pint as no-one was drinking it, and I will give it a try again...but fuck me it was bad.
