Worst decisions in Cricket history

Point 1 is daft though (even if it’s what’s happening in reality) and people are fine to question it. The aim should be to win the Ashes overall, not gamble recklessly on the first test.

Net net the new regime has been successful, but Allardyce was at SAFC yet was still the bloke who did the worst team selection I’ve ever seen (starting Toivenen over Defoe in a derby). We shouldn’t just be nodding dogs at everything they do.
People are fine to question it but he if you call that decision stupid you are going to be making that same call dozens of times in the future as they continue to win plenty of test matches, playing a great band of cricket with the occasional blip as high risk, high reward decisions will always have.

Hope so!

I’m fine with more aggressive third innings declarations btw. Giving the opposition a sniff to provide ourselves with a much bigger chance. Caution cost us a few tests in the past, particularly under Strauss.

How have we gambled on the first test though marra? We've played well and been always just ahead of a really good Aussie side.

That’s fine mate everyone entitled to their opinion.

It was you that said it wasn’t cricket.

So is it the worst decision in cricket history or not cricket as you suggesting?

As it can’t be both.
It's not cricket wasn't meant to be taken literally. 16.4 lacks the nuances ,skills and subtleties of the longer red ball form of the game imo. It's not cricket as I know cricket. I regard it as a wholly unnecessary addition to the cricket calendar eliminating proper cricket from the height of the summer. In that respect it is the worst decision in cricket history.
T20 has, and still does, attract a new following.

You know your stuff and I know you well and have absolutely no doubt this is the case. However what I’m finding is everyone likes bazball til it goes wrong. They love the adventurous strokeplay until someone is out and becomes reckless and many happy with the thought of positive declarations until we lose because of one.

People who have only started watching cricket this ashes just don’t understand Bazball do they?
Another who thinks a claimed understanding of the non-existent “Bazball” makes them part of an elite group of Cricket fans, rather than a bandwagon member

Ok then - according to Broad scoring a quick 400 and declaring was giving them the best opportunity of winning a test match by getting 20 wickets on a flat pitch with weather around. Given that they have already stated from day 1 that they will always risk defeat to win games how is it that ridiculous? How is it more ridiculous than declaring and giving Pakistan a chance to win a test match that we had dominated for 3 and a half days but was likely to end in a draw if we didn't declare. That ridiculous decision is now seen as one of the bravest and most fantastic declarations of all time but its essentially the same thing - taking the draw out.

I guarantee if you think this was one of the worst decisions in the history of the game in 3 years time under Stokes and McCullum it wont even be in your top 10 and you will have seen us play some unbelievably good cricket in that time.

Yeah tbf I knew what you meant mate, just fundamentally disagree.

Not with the hundred, but a short format tournament in the height of summer I like.

I also disagree regarding skills, skills developed in the shortest format of the game have enhanced the longer form of the game and it’s better for it and there is tremendous cricketing skills in the shorter format of the game.

Certainly agree 2 short formats tournaments in the calendar too much.

But the constant criticism of the short format game and belittling the talent on show and cricketing skills I will always disagree with

No such thing as "16.4", it's called The Hundred.

It's still cricket - just a different form of it. Fairly interesting as an experiment but I expect it to be dead within a few years.

Tbf I don’t disagree and I’m not against experimenting. But it’s what came with it that doesn’t sit right with me. Giving it the prime August slot, making it the only cricket that’s FTA so has the most exposure and it’s diminished the one day cup (probably my favourite format to go and watch at country level) even further

You claimed declaring as the worst decision in test cricket. It’s not even in the top 100. Log off man.

Not so sure there's that much criticism of the short format as such, it's more directed at the Hundred(16.4 appears to cause offense). Certainly evening cupties back in the day were one of the most enjoyable forms of cricket. It's also brought about improved fielding and improvised shot selection. Blocking the school holidays for the Hundred is the main bone of contention.
T20 reserved for Friday evening's and Sunday afternoons throughout the summer months and the 4 day game could run alongside it- short blocks of both separately.
Elephant in the room is undoubtedly the superfluous Hundred.

We’ll see today. I stand by it matey.

It comes to something when people were begging for rain to secure a draw when we could have been in a comfortable position of win or draw.
