People are fine to question it but he if you call that decision stupid you are going to be making that same call dozens of times in the future as they continue to win plenty of test matches, playing a great band of cricket with the occasional blip as high risk, high reward decisions will always have.

It's not cricket wasn't meant to be taken literally. 16.4 lacks the nuances ,skills and subtleties of the longer red ball form of the game imo. It's not cricket as I know cricket. I regard it as a wholly unnecessary addition to the cricket calendar eliminating proper cricket from the height of the summer. In that respect it is the worst decision in cricket history.

You know your stuff and I know you well and have absolutely no doubt this is the case. However what I’m finding is everyone likes bazball til it goes wrong. They love the adventurous strokeplay until someone is out and becomes reckless and many happy with the thought of positive declarations until we lose because of one.

Ok then - according to Broad scoring a quick 400 and declaring was giving them the best opportunity of winning a test match by getting 20 wickets on a flat pitch with weather around. Given that they have already stated from day 1 that they will always risk defeat to win games how is it that ridiculous? How is it more ridiculous than declaring and giving Pakistan a chance to win a test match that we had dominated for 3 and a half days but was likely to end in a draw if we didn't declare. That ridiculous decision is now seen as one of the bravest and most fantastic declarations of all time but its essentially the same thing - taking the draw out.

Not so sure there's that much criticism of the short format as such, it's more directed at the Hundred(16.4 appears to cause offense). Certainly evening cupties back in the day were one of the most enjoyable forms of cricket. It's also brought about improved fielding and improvised shot selection. Blocking the school holidays for the Hundred is the main bone of contention.
