Moeen Ali offered Ashes return

Doesn’t send a great message to aspiring spinners when they go back
Lobbing them in last minute would be a dis-service to them.

Did you watch Kerrigan, Borthwick and Crane in Ashes test matches believe they all went at over 6 runs on over in their solitary tests.

I know scotty picked up some wickets but they were filthy wickets from memory

They were indeed. There’s every chance Moeen could go at those rates these days. Unfortunately the well is pretty dry. It may be better to just use Woakes, have his batting as extra depth to the order and rotate the other seamers as and when (both match to match and in play).

Feel for Leach like

Moeen has had that before. But he's got 195 test wickets and is nearly 36 years old. So not destroying a career before it's begun.

As much as I thought they'd back Ahmed he's been largely rubbish with the ball this season. Probably why they are not going for him as more than likely that would end up being in the destroy his career category.

Moeen is also a better batsman than Woakes albeit not a better bowler. However Woakes with the ball on a flat wicket with the sun out and the Aussies may as well put their feet up.
Awful message to send out to players in county cricket, as much as anything else.
Do they care though? If county cricket mattered a great deal then Compton would be opening not Crawley.

Tongue got picked despite not doing much in county cricket this season. Cook would have been the stand out going off county form.

Moeen is a vastly experienced cricketer, the type of cricketer they want in the side.

I think having now listened to McCullum on interview with Sky, also then read Stokes interview with Nas there's no point even trying to second guess them. Got to just hope it pays off.

I think it's a shame it's not 2014 and he's making his debut. The Moeen we watched for years would excel even more in this side.

A bit too late now for him to get more than a one last hurrah(hopefully)
I wasn’t too sure on him returning but after listening to the wisden podcast I’m firmly in the Play Modern camp now.

The post above yours describes it quite well. I don’t think he’s a particularly good bowler and I think that’s quite an important factor.

I’d much rather see them pick young Ahmed, or even Parkinson, if they want to pick a spinner for his ability to bat, which I worry is maybe why they’re looking at Ali - I’d rather have Livingstone (although Ahmed is useful with the bat).

I dont think thats fair like, fair enough if you think he is past his best, but he has nearly 200 test wickets at 36 or someit

That means you have been a good bowler, Livingstone is no more than a part timer

as I say if its his ae then fair enouh but dont agree, I actualy think he got more criticism due to his batting when he was in the side as a bowler

yeah this is fair, he was a good bowler like, we cant rewrite history

its about winning test matches not "sending out messages"

you seem to think its as simple as just picking highest run scorer or wicket taker, its not.

Aye I am torn on this like, kind of agree but I dont think you can play a 5 test series with no spinner
I’m not talking about his career achievements, I’m talking about how good of a spin bowler he is NOW.

Yeah fair enough

If we’re going down this route I’d much rather they just pick Livingstone. He’d almost certainly be more effective with the bat and has seemingly been working hard on his bowling with decent returns (albeit in white ball cricket).

He’s nowhere near as a good a bowler like

Ali isn’t getting picked due to battjng, he has 200 test wickets

Livingstone couldn’t bowl 25 overs in a day he’s a part timer

If we're going for retired test players can we also persuade Alastair Cook to open in place of Crawley?

Stokes told nasser in an interview this week that cook type player wouldn’t have been picked under him

People need to get used to it like

Unless your strike rate is 75 plus you don’t gonna get picked for England
