As for consistent runs season after season in the NYSD league Clayton Lambert took some beating mind, long time ago so memory might not be that good but seemed to score runs every week!

Take overseas pros out and the Coast League was just as good

It really was not. Senior League players actually played as pros in the Coast league.

Preferred the NYSD personally

Cup results showed not as high a standard. As did players selected for Durham when it was a minor county

The Durham Senior League was a great league. Sadly the clubs/officials refused to bow to change, leaving the better clubs with no choice but to move to the new "Premier League".
The NYSD, embraced change and always had promotion and regulation, so comfortably grew into an ECB Premier League, and are still around to provide good quality club cricket for the North East.

The problem been and was always the case that the same clubs, your North Durhams, Wearmouth etc etc would finish bottom of the senior league year in year out.

Where at the same time you had quality teams in coast and county leagues, such as Ryhope, Hetton Lyons, Crook etc.

Them 3 teams below although in a lesser standard league were better than the two above in a better standard of league.

Yet were not allowed to progress as promotion blocked.

Any organization or league that does not allow a team to progress by blocking them doing so is fundamentally flawed.

The Durham Senior League standard was extremely high but the blocking of teams progressing should not be defended

Horden I believe it was. They’ve definitely fell of a cliff since the senior leagues demise a although I wouldn’t put the blame of that at the hands of the premier league.

I agree, I don't think the inception of NEPL caused them to go downhill. More likely old folks who hate change. It will be repeated in every social club in the land. Same seat, same pint and constantly whining

Only said it ‘tounge and cheek’ hence the winking imogie. That said, the reason why senior league players played as pros, is that the Coast League clubs had no choice where to spend their money. Also the Coast League was littered with senior league pro failures.

If the senior league was still going I’d wager Horden would be rock bottom of it without a win for a couple of years. No money, no juniors I don’t think and nobody watching them is the cause of that.

Yes it was Seaham harbour and Durham city fighting for the wooden spoon when the senior league was on its last legs but the way the world has moved the last ten years or so if the senior league was still around today Horden would be the bottom side unless they had a benefactor ploughing cash in as their bar makes nowt these days.

You haven’t answered the question about how a first team playing in the DSL can attract a 9 year old.

The standard is lower across the board cos for years junior cricket slumped. That’s societal issues though (lack of cricket on TV, growth of football etc).
