Bid rejected for Clarke

Quite a big moment this. Chatter suggests that Clarke and the club are both keen to thrash out a new deal. If he is willing to turn down Premier League clubs to stay its a massive coup for the club and further proof that these players believe in what we're doing. Also shows that KLD and the board wont be selling at the first sign of a big wedge. And £9m to this club atm is gigantic, make no mistake about it.

If this is the sign of things to come then this club can go wherever it f***ing wants.
Fingers crossed

I've got a horrible feeling this will drag on all summer and the lad will have his head turned by agents. Hope I'm wrong but when noises like this start "making" there way into the media it's normally from one side or the other and I don't think it'll be from our side with this one.

I think people get a bit romantic about Brighton, like you said they've spent above their means and owe the owner a fuckton of money. It's just a bit of a fairy tale ATM that little old Brighton have broken the top six on a shoestring. It maybe compared to the normal top six but they've spent money and spent it well the past four or so windows that means they'll make good profit on four or five players. But not really a shoestring.
Brighton are the fashionable little club for sky etc this year, bit your 100% correct that previously they have been totally dependent on their owner putting in huge sums of money to get them there.

Even their own fans admit they are kanckered if Bloom ever wants his £400 plus million back and it wasn't that long ago they where being touted as one of the worst ran clubs financially in the premier league. They hit a sweet spot when Chelsea paid fortunes for a couple of their players and for Potter and his team.

Brentford, however whilst not as "fashionable" or popular with Sky etc have a model much closer to what we should be looking at following.

It could also be seen that the opposition could have been concentrating on the threat of Amad and Roberts which left spaces for Clarke (and Cirkin at times) and vice versa.

One thing the season showed is how dangerous both our flanks were and how sides couldn't cope trying to nullifying both.

Amad, Roberts and Clarke were all huge for us.

Just wait until we have someone rampaging in at CF

Brighton have made a profit in the market about 3 times in 10 year.

They've spent an absolute fortune, hence owing the owner £400m.

They got a state-of-the-art stadium and training ground out of that as well. Considering Chelsea spunked the best part of £350m this year was it? I think they have done pretty well all considering and he will never call that money in. In fact, the sales of MacCallister and Caicedo should put a large dent in to that this summer, if he chose to.

Bloom has taken his boyhood club (like any fan with the resources would) from being on the brink of disappearing as a football club and turned them into an established club in the top flight. They were playing at the Withdean only 12 years ago. It's a great story and one every fan outside the big boys hopes for. Their journey has been remarkable and is a credit to everyone involved.

Totally agree, doesn't alter the fact that the owner has pumped millions in.

Nowt wrong with that. Their sporting model is very well put together and they are well run. I know a few people there and it's a good club. A lot of the language we hear from Speakman in terms of what we are doing on that side is very similar to what they started a while ago. So it makes me very hopeful.

Brighton have spent some coin in all areas in recent times. They do seem to have got their recruitment set up right, and there's no arguing that it's seen them unearth some real talent, which has then been converted into some huge profits.

I can get my head round that we probably need to sell someone, to then reinvest and thats how we need to go about our business. Clarke is the last one I'd want to see go though. Losing Amad and Clarke, is a huge shift in our attacking threat, and what made us exciting to watch. Patterson, Neil even Stewart possibly, I could understand, but I'd be gutted if it was Clarke.

If you’re going to try to find an angle to slag off every Sunderland player possible please at least check on player histories. Roberts is not on a downward spiral at all - he started in the Championship, got picked up by Man City where he played <half a dozen games in total but was loaned out to championship, Scottish premiership and Troyes. So the L1 season with Sunderland was his first real full season in a settled permanent club, and this season he has been better. So not a downward spiral at all. If he is on a downward spiral so is Clarke who went Championship - big move that didn’t work out - Sunderland in L1/ Championship play offs. Obviously thats a risible comment but because you’re such a massive brain you’ll no doubt confirm otherwise to yourself.
patrick roberts played 55 games (only one less game than he has played for SAFC-and as he was on loan for some of his tome at SAFC as well) for celtic..and was very good for them..he has also beenvery good for SAFC..if i originally used the term downward spiral im happy to withdraw ot, its too harsh for what I mean..but he isnt hitting new heights in the way some of the younger players at SAFC are..

In an ideal world aye for sure, but a better player than Clarke for half the price in the championship? Not likely to be honest.

We will sell if we get a much bigger offer IMO.
If we well for say, £23 million combined for instance, it would be very plausible to find a better replacement for £10 million. They might not walk into the team and be instantly brilliant, but then again, they might. The job Brentford has done replacing players in the championship was fantastic. Got Watkins on a free.

I dunno if their strategy has been a 10 year thing, but it's definitely been going on a while.

It's not an over night thing, we've managed to turn our fortunes around in 12 months, from a squad with little value to a squad with a potential value of over £100 million.

Look at the quoted prices of Brighton's players, Bloom could sell that squad if he wanted the money back.
Havent seen much of that financial clout yet ie when our main man is running out of contract or we have no strikers.

Jury still very much out!
Oh I agree, not gonna deny they're holding back. Unfortunately, we've got a wage limit.

They thought they were getting the Hungarian lad in Jan, he'd have cost us a fee. But we let ourselves down not looking for a striker permanently.

Because if the player gets offered double the wages, probably even more than that, and SAFC can also make say 10-15 million profit on the deal, it suits everyone.

As fans we’d like to keep him, the player himself would probably love to stay here if we could match the wage, and the club would love to keep him. But ultimately this is why money and ffp have ruined and continue to ruin the game, it’s financially solid for us to sell and him to earn a lot more, even if those clubs in question are historically nowhere near us.

It’s how football is and will work for the foreseeable unfortunately.

The plus side is, with say 15 million profit you can bring in three quality players, maybe even more with our current record of finding gems.
A player like Clarke can be the catalyst for promotion, he is vital to us and the way we play. A promotion that increases revenue by 170 million at least, so I reject the argument that a 10 to 15 million profit represents a goid deal. It simply doesn't and the fact that a number of PL teams are interested tells you that he is seen as a cut above championship level.

The idea that we go out and buy 5 quality players is fanciful, it doesn't work like that. There are no guarantees these players are out there, that they will perform and more crucially the club definitely are not in the business of lumbering themselves with relatively expensive new signings on decent contracts who become a millstone around the neck.

Clarke is proven at this level, can help us go up and we should do everything to keep him.

Roberts was never on loan to us. His contract with City was cancelled and we signed him on a 6 month deal.

Of course Hot Since. He he has also benefitted from his training this season and has demonstrated the results of that on the pitch.

I believe that he should be retained but if he was to be sold then would need to be a minimum of £27,000 with a sell on payback to Spurs of a maximum 5% if there is no % agreed. TOT showed no interest and I believe never played him.
he did get some minutes for tottenham but not many..they did show interest when they recalled him from one of his loans..but he wasnt of the standard required then.

so he had only a shorter term arrangement with us initially than he had with several of the other clubs he was at..

they have spent a lot of cash..but the league decides how much now..not the owners..

No proof that any offer was even made in the first place.

That 'article' (does it even count as one?) is utter gash.

On a serious note, £25m should be the minimum we'd consider for him.

This.

They've made some of the big money clubs (Spurs, Chelsea) look like utter idiots in the process.

The real success story of the season.
