Is the best/safest strategy (for the model at this time) simply to appoint one of these up and coming foreign coaches to work under Mowbray for the next 12-18 months?

A bit like De Zerbi did with Potter at Brighton - learning the ropes re. English football & keeping continuity.

Then taking over at the right time.

Keeps the Mowbray feelgood factor & stops any instability with risky appointment.

Can't see anything wrong with this approach.
 

There’s a bit of perspective needed here imo. Sentiment is probably kicking in for the majority of us. Mowbray has over 800 games as a manager, but only one season in the Premier league. He has been involved in the play off 6 times, but never won them. We finished on 69 points and it could be argued that would have been more with a fully fit squad, however we don’t know that for certain. 69 points isn't usually enough to get you into 6th place. The word 'overachievment' is getting used a lot, despite everyone saying how good our players look. Again I think saying overachieving is harsh on what are very good players who have proved themselves capable at this level. The bottom line for me is that whilst fans expectations have been exceeded, Mowbray has managed to get us to finish at a level he has achieved quite consistently over his career. History suggests that he doesn't go above this level and surely we all want to be playing higher up?

De Zerbi didn't do that with Potter marra. I don't think that system would work at all, the players would have a completely different relationship with a coach compared to a head coach, it'd make it more difficult going from one to the other.

I don't think it works well for Mowbray either, he knows if he has a dodgy run that other bloke is waiting to take over from him.

There's also the problem of a head coach currently employed being willing to step back and be a coach? It's probably quite demeaning.
