Attendance Thread - Watford

There isnt. When other clubs sell out it is around the given capacity figure. We have never been around 49,000. In the last 10 years. Party Due to the press box being moved. Saturday will be around 45.5 given Watfords unsold tickets and the front of the north stand upper not being used
“The Stadium of Light’s current capacity of 48,707 makes the club’s home the ninth-biggest football ground in England.”

From SAFC.com

Yeah. I really don’t know why they’ve not been put on sale. It’s our home end. Why have segregation??
Because the " Singing Sectioners' " behaviours can be deemed to be a tad antisocial and not what people in the " Family Zone " would like their 8 year olds to be next to. Also the upper blocks get overcrowded due to migration from elsewhere, persistent over crowding is not looked on as a good thing by the people that sign off the SOL's safety certificate. Front rows being empty is down to reducing the likelihood of pitch incursions at key moments (eg when we score an important goal).

If I'm right you live in South Yorkshire. No doubt you will have seen in the local press down there that SWFC have had further capacity restrictions imposed on them following their Cup game against the Mags. This was due to too many of the Mag Muppets deciding that they would "stand where they want" (in the middle) rather than in their allocated seats.

If the Club ignore the concerns of SAG (Safety Advisory Group) they run the risk of those sections being closed altogether. And that would really fuck up the capacity.

The expansion should include wider concourses and new facades on S,W and E Stands.
The South Stand Extension is planned to look the same as the current West Stand and 3/4 of the North West Corner so the remainder of any extension around to the North Stand would be the same. Its the way its been designed.
NSU has approx 3,600 seats. Watford have sold 800 of them. So 2800 will be empty

48300 less 2800 empty is circa 45,500.

There is absolutely zero need for increasing the size of the stadium for football matches at this current time or any credble foreseeable football situation.

If we were promoted its likely we will lose a lot more games and crowds would settle at about 44k.

Only if we progressed to being top 4 and baked in top 4 for years would it make any sense at all.

History in my lifetime tells us we are more likely to be in League 1 than 7th.

For football the stadium is too big for 90% of situations including relatively successful ones.

And if we ever did become genuinely successful then you could extend with confidence and have the money to pay for It.

Talk of extending the stadium for football is totally pointless.

For concerts we could have more seats.

But do you really want to rattle around in an even bigger stadium for the match just so that 6 concerts a year are bigger.

The whole idea is completely stupid in my opinion.
Whilst I agree with your post , there’s another angle.

In most of our lifetimes we have followed a team with limited success. In that time we have often gotten big gates and have filled the stadium
Often.

If , and it’s a big if , we did become consistently successful as in high league positioning our gates would soar. Look at This weekends game against Watford , a game which only contains hope of a future play off place . We could have topped 50k probably.

Imagine if that was a game to claim a champions
League place ? You wouldn’t get a ticket at 60k.

We shouldn’t minimise how big we can be.

SAFC don't have 'normal trading flows' to pay for it.

Have you seen SAFC's accounts?

You've simply repeated what I said in the last post and termed it 'long term finance/capital payments' or whatever it was.

In simple terms, SAFC do not have the 'trading flows' to repay financing.

A bit like you borrowing money to pay for a swimming pool when all of your income is already committed to bills and the like.

Ar no point have I said the ground should be extended now, though there will be an argument for it if/when we get established in the PL. I was simply responding to a question of how it gets paid for.

So it’s the SAG who say we can’t sell tickets in our home end??

If this is true it’s crazy the family zone hasn’t been moved earlier.

The screen grab below is from the Reading game. When they released the South Stand blanked out seats on the day of the match. They newly available seats stand out like a sore thumb. There are numerous posts in the Thread of people saying "1 seat available in X Stand" or similar.
If they had unblocked these seats in one go someone would have noticed it happening. They might do so in the morning as they would appear to have run out of "upstairs" tickets.
But if they do release them it won't increase the Tracker numbers it will just do away with Hetton's "Blocked Out" 350.

Why on earth are these seats blocked out to begin with?

It doesn’t need extending. I agree with you RE the financing of it and that should be done in terms of stadium redevelopment as it’s needed

Well, it doesn't get paid by 'normal trading flows' as you suggested because they don't exist.

Guaranteed future income as a result of extending the ground is nowhere near a good case either.

There is no evidence that the demand is there. If SAFC had a full house most matches and another 10,000 or whatever were trying to buy tickets, then that would be good grounds. These are businessmen and they'll look at the cost of maintenance, catering staff, upkeep of the extended section of the ground, policing costs and so on and offset that with future demand.

It makes absolutely no sense for them to extend the ground, with all of the cost that entails, when as it stands there is no prospect of that money being recovered in ticket sales.

This should be the end of the debate.

Still a fairly decent crowd for a newly promoted side !!
