WMS Sunderland AFC Opinion – The Season is Dead, I am so Sorry

With a striker who knows where we could have finished.

Hope I’m wrong but we may not get a better chance in the next few years.

Little Sunderland has to remember our level. We have the manager craping himself because we are playing Burnley.

Of course we need to be realistic but dear lord We need to grow some balls.
Whether you like it or not, Burnley are in receipt of Premier League parachute money. They spent £38m and still made £38m of profit on player sales. We can’t compete financially with that the first year after promotion from L1. We’ll have every chance of going up if we recruit well going forward. The days of an owner spending their way out the Champ are fast evaporating. See Derby, Wigan, Reading, Sheff Utd as to what happens when you overspend and the owner sacks it off if unsuccessful.

When it comes to somehow obliterating the advantage of parachute payments nobody in the history of such payouts has done so quite as spectacularly as us.

Utter bollocks that the season is dead

The football has been pretty decent even if we haven’t won games. There are matches left this season that if we win will put smiles on faces

……and to be totally safe at this stage is more than I thought we’d achieve

Some people need to give their heads a shake

The January transfer window killed the momentum we had going since the play off final.

If we finish 14th though, it’s still been a good season. It’s just a shame we didn’t a bit of a risk on a couple of players that normally wouldn’t fit our model

They’ve got a model and you must applaud them to sticking to it, we’ve been the final pay off for too many players well past their sell by date in the past , we can’t and mustn’t ever see a return to that strategy.

How many thread are started about bringing ex players back shows the mentality of some of our fans ?

Mid table on the first season back has to be seen as a success , to me at least.

I don’t disagree with a lot you have said but we have to show some ambition and not be like scared cats because oooh we are playing Burnley.

The club and some supporters are frightened of our shadow these days.

You've just defined a dead season like. Can't go up, can't go down, can't really finish anywhere other than midtable. That doesn't mean we haven't had a good season and it hasn't been entertaining.

Where is anyone saying they're scared of playing Burnley? I've yet to see us go into a game this season and not have a go at the opposition.

Im a touch scared of playing Burnley to be fair.

The injury-ravaged squad who are probably halfway on their hols against easily the best team in the division whose squad's budget is of a different league.

It's a massive miss match, could get ugly but you never know.

I think their squad depth is much much better, but say if Clarke and Roberts have strong games I bet we cause them all sorts of problems as well

We're capable of causing them a problem I'm sure, as we are any club in the division. Are we capable of remaining compact and solid while doing so?

Stranger things have happened of course but we could get hammered as it is a bit of a miss match.

The essence of what you say is fair but I’d say the majority of supporters are very disappointed that we showed absolutely no real desire in January to sign a couple of strikers (from somewhere in the world!) and an experienced central midfielder who, within reason, would have cemented our chances of competing in the play offs. It’s over two years since we paid money for a striker, an area of the field where we’ve lacked strength in depth for years. We could have built on the post play off momentum even more and tried to take an opportunity to gain promotion that was clearly there to be had. We absolutely pissed all over Middlesbrough at home but look how they’ve reacted since including bringing in Cameron Archer who we should have been after too, for one available striking example.

From where we were at the start of Feb, to be this low down now is nothing short of a disgrace tbh. Very poor management and squad management have led us to this pretty shitty position - and the reality is that we’re only going to fall down the table as other teams have momentum and will overtake us. Can’t see us winning 2 more games tbh. Mowbray and Speakman out.

We should have been around Boro if we had a striker, which would have had us in with a shot at automatic, never mind the playoffs. Sorry but I’m not accepting that Boro have a better squad than us (outside of the striker situation) - so see no reason why we couldn’t have at least been competing.

Massive missed opportunity, thanks to speakman and Mowbray
They just say it how it is, they are right the season was done on the 1st of Feb.
Bingo, well done Speakman

Couldn't agree more.
