The Sunderland supporters branch trying to change the history of Athletic Bilbao

Sevilla ordered red and white shirts from Sunderland througu a Scottish player they had playing for them. The shirts needed to arrive before a certain date for a charity match. They didn't arrive so Sevilla stuck with their original shirts. What happened to those red and white shirts they ordered? They remained missing until a year later when Athletic Bilbao came across 50 red and white shirts in the port in Southampton.

We believe Athletic Bilbao picked up these shirts and assumed they were Southampton but actually they were Sunderland and the ones that didn't get to Sevilla
A big if though, if the club picked them up in Southampton, that's where the club chose to go, not Sunderland, so the link should be Southampton. if they came up here and got the strips directly and then they sailed out of the wear then fair enough. Clutching at more straws than a masturbating scarecrow for me. But very welcome to support the Lads though 🟥⬜⚽😉

I am sure there was a club in South America maybe Argentina that was named Sunderland after us. They play in black and white stripes though as the pics they had seen back in the 1900s were only black and white

They wanted blue and white of Blackburn Rovers but they couldn't get enough. The boat to Bilbao went from Southampton. They bought red and green shirts in Southampton at the last minute.

The red and white stripes were similar to the ones of Sunderland as the Southampton stripes were slightly different

I get that, but what's saying they weren't Exeter City stripes. I just don't see a plausible connection.

Sevilla ordered red red and white sunderland shirts a year earlier but never arrived..

Athletic Bilbao representative goes to a shop and gets 50 red and white kits at the last minute 🤔

For Southampton's status at the time, they simply wouldn't have had 50 red and white shirts ready to go.

Sparta Rotterdam is the correct answer

The club continued to exist, however, and in 1899 the board of Sparta visited a match of . Impressed with the red-and-white jersey of the English club, the board decided that Sunderland's colours (red-white striped jersey, black shorts) would henceforth be the colours of Sparta.
And still some on here lick the hoop of Feyenoord

Just an update on this. The response to the article being released about the Bilbao Black Cats has been incredible.

We've had local historians, radio and newspapers getting in touch with us to do an interview and tell them our findings. Some of the local historians believe we've found the missing pieces to the puzzle which will no doubt put an end to the Southampton link and confirm the Sunderland link.

We're absolutely lost for words. Jonny and myself have felt for years that the Southampton link wasn't right and that it was indeed Sunderland. Of course, we were called out for being all sorts for wanting to dig deep and find the link and it seems now we finally have.

Interesting few weeks ahead 🔴⚪

Well done and good luck.

That's nowt, the mags can boast that Juventus got their strips from them the mags of Notts county that is
Not true.
In 1897 Juve directors were in having a pint in Kennedys, Tyne Dock and this bloke came in from the Nook and sold them 50 Notts County shirts that he'd nicked from the boot of a car. The car had belonged to the kit man of Notts County who had recently been on a tour of County Durham which had included Jarrow Roofing.

They’re not even called Athletic Bilbao. No wonder they hate us

here's my 2 shirts both got Athletic Club on badge, label and back of collar, the right hand one is Kappa from 1993 and the other is 2001 you'll notice there's no makers label as they'd fell out with all the sportswear firms so made them themselves iirc

Yes, but they’re not called Athletic Bilbao. And they don’t like being called that
