Mowbray

Gelhardt didn't do much in the first half but we were appreciably worse in the second with absolutely zero outlet to even aim for, unless he was injured I've no idea what TM was thinking.

Starting a game with Pritchard in a supposed central midfield slot was ludicrous. Hopefully Ekwah is ready to get involved next outing. As someone else said yesterday, Hume into the middle might not be a bad shout either, seems to have the attributes.

If Lihadji and Bennette aren't ready then he's got to do something like sticking Onien up front assuming the conclusion is that Gelhardt isn't the answer. We can't carry on like this.

No striker is terrible but feel the Sheff U knocked back approach from Everton for their CF didn't help us with Simms.

Team selection was terrible and even though the 1st goal was a disgrace , we were terrible.

Gelhardt was stinking yesterday he deserved to come off. If Lihadji was incapable of matching his first half performance then I think we’ve signed a dud.

Mowbray is able to train and select someone in that position- he is not restricted to only selecting 10 players...
But he hasn't done it, and it looks like he hasn't got a clue about how to change it. We all know what Ross Stewart gave us in terms of his all round play, and we now can't replicate that. Unless Mowbray manages to address it, the rest of the season will be ........ interesting.

Who does he beef the midfield up with?
Ba, Michut, Ekwah?
They're all kids.

What a clusterfuck.
You’re right, he is short of options. He could try O’Nien sitting as deep midfield protecting the back four. Neil and Michut either side so we have a midfield three, and rotate out one of the wide players. We would immediately be more solid and have more midfield options, but of course could carry less of an attacking threat.

Mowbray can then see the game and use the substitutes more tactically which is something we haven’t done so well recently.

Lihadji has played in ligue 1, played in the uefa champions league and for the french u21s. Madness he's not being given a chance in the circumstances.

He’s not a manager. He’s a head coach who has no real clout unfortunately. Oh for a strong character in charge. His press conferences are embarrassing of late, very negative and psychologically destructive-he needs to remember the players will see them too.
He has whatever clout he takes. There are ways and means of being heard if you have a strong character. He is involved in the recruitment process and has a chance to voice his views - he himself has confirmed this on numerous occasions. It comes across that he is a shy little kid at these meetings and doesn’t fight for what he wants - there’s only one person to blame for that

O'nien is the obvious choice.
I'd change to 433 with O'nien, Neil and Ba.

...and it won't be forgotten.
Yes we have no striker, Speakman is to blame for that, but we have defenders and are able to put 11 lads out on the field.

Yesterday's performance was down to tactics, preparation on the training ground and team selection. Speakman does not control those things.
That performance was unforgivable.
Why is KLD not involved in this? We have no strikers as clubs wouldn't let there's leave for next to nowt.

  • Scattergun team selections and substitutions that are mainly far too late anyway.
  • Negative press conferences where he looks constantly depressed-gets asked one question but answers twenty.
  • Lack of strikers an excuse but losing three in a row to ordinary sides like Rotherham, Coventry and Stoke highlights his ‘form’ at his previous clubs where they fall away badly towards the business end of the season.
  • Is he really the BEST man for the job?
I think just getting over the line this season was always the intention, problem is we've done really well and now some fans think we should be throwing the kitchen sink at promotion when we're not ready at all. I get that will hurt some of our fans, but we're just turning into a decent Championship side. If we were to go up this season, we'd fo back down with an embarrassing bang.....we're just not ready yet.
We had an opportunity to compete to go up but failed miserably in January to try and sign key players for striking and centre mid positions.
If we’d gone up and come straight back down we’d be £100m better off. You can’t pick and choose when you might go up/that’s ridiculously idealistic!

Like I said it wouldn’t have taken anything to match and surpass what Gelhardt provided. If he’s not ready to play 45 minutes with barely any pressure on him what the fuck are we doing?

Yesterday was a combination of lots of things.

Firstly it was the first time i’ve made the 200 mile trip in a few years (since my kids were born) so I’m an obvious jinx.

Secondly, the lack of a striker - we had no way to change how we were playing to go more direct as we had no focal point to aim at

Thirdly, the tactics in setting up with a single central midfielder. It made our first half quite sloppy and stopped us getting a foothold in the game. We brought Michut on at half time but he wasn’t what we needed in there - Small Willybone was everywhere for them and Neil/Michut couldn’t handle him. It should have been O’Nien or Ekwah that came into CM. The second goal came from a mistake by Dan Neil.

Fourthly, the referee. Gave us nothing for the first 20mins then booked Dan Neil for just about our first foul of the game. Gave a drop ball to their keeper when we had the ball out on the wing after their player went down - instead of giving possession back to us, their keeper ended up starting the play that ended in their goal. At half time I’m not sure if the ref booked Clarke for talking to him, or if he booked Mowbray for trying to go over and talk to him but he lost it.

Finally, players losing their heads/bad day at the office. Our passing in the first half was sloppy AF, a Dan Neil mistake for the second goal, and although the 3rd was a good hit, it came from bad defending and our back 6 pretty much lost their heads from that point. Our 4 attacking players then resorted to trying to dribble past the entire Stoke team without looking to pass the ball.
