Attendance Thread - Stoke City

The big clubs certainly would, such as the Manchester and London clubs if they had suddenly found themselves with a couple of relegations. A struggling West Ham team are averaging over 60,000. Their all time record was I believe around 41,000 in the days when the three world cup winners played for them. Is that not remarkable ? The game has changed so much since the Premier League was formed and now even more in the time since the pandemic. Our gates are good but not remarkable as I believe at least another nine clubs - Man Utd, City, Liverpool, Everton, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham would draw either similar or much higher crowds. Are not Southend's crowds remarkable for a team who at best can only make the National League play offs. They are drawing the same average as when they were in the second tier in the early nineties. Nowt wrong with our support but hardly remarkable.

Well read my reply
Mate, you think tourists would be interested in 2nd & 3rd tier footy? No they wouldn’t, have a word with yourself man.
I can give you context.
Derby relegated with record low points of 11 averaged 32432. Following season finished 18th in championship and averaged 29,440. When Newcastle were relegated in 08 09 their average was 48,750 and it dropped to 43,388 in the Championship. Not 15,000. We went down in 03 with an average of 39,698 and dropped to 27,119 in the Championship.
Aston Villa were promoted from the Third Division in 1972 with an average gate of 31,952 including three league gates above 45,000. This was their fifth consecutive season outside the top flight and second season in the third tier. Football attendances were a lot lower then and clubs did not have the advantage of having mainly season ticket holders.
As I have said .. our attendances are good. But they must be looked it within the overall popularity of the game. And clubs such as Everton and Arsenal have not sunk so low to give their supporters a chance to prove their loyalty. A winning team in a lower division will attract big crowds. We proved that in the sixties and seventies and did so again in the Third tier.
Mag ? I have watched the lads for nearly sixty years ...
Round the f***ing loop yea.

If they can pay contactless they can go to the TO and buy a ticket surely ? Is that still a thing getting tickets at ticket offices ?
I know there was difficulties last time. Then you have to que to get a ticket then at the turnstile.Surely a couple of cash and contactless turnstiles caters for everyone.

I’m not against this system for people who want to use it but let’s also have a limited system for people who are not tech savvy and make it easy for people eh may just want to turn upon the day.

Inclusivity is not too much to ask in this day and age. The club have got this badly wrong

If you were to say to any of those clubs that over the next 65 years you will be relegated 11 times including two relegations to the 3rd tier one lasting 4 seasons and the highest you would finish was 10th and that only 3 times.
34 seasons spent out of the top division how many fans do you think they would have?
You have to put context to this, whichever way you look at it out support is amazing.

Baffles me why they'd leave 300 tickets left for sale on the day of the match like.. Really can't get my head round that

Every single one of those teams have had far better years/decades than we have as well, even the mags as much as we like to downplay it, have challenged for titles and had successive European campaigns. They’ve all been premier league mainstays and been in Europe, so there isn’t a comparison. Even Leeds who we sometimes get compared with because only them in recent times have ‘suffered’ as much as we have, have won a league title as recent as the 90s, challenged for things and been in Europe in the 2000s. I don’t think there’s a fanbase in England that’s been tested like ours have.

Spot on mate, couldn’t agree more.
