As for the "new" terms - duel and transition are important things to consider at the tactical analysis level. Football tactics have come on massively in the last 10-20 years thankfully.
Any evidence of the word assist being in the football vocabulary 25 years ago? Strongly doubt it was like.

Duel has never been a football term, challenge has, one on one has, but duel definitely hasn’t.

I have some old programs that talk about Summerbees assists. Somewhere. And a 'create your own fantasy football league' book that also definitely mentions them so it must have been possible to find out the information

I was very obsessed with football as a kid. It was not a thing to the extent that it is now. There wasnt tables in my memory but it definitely existed. And by the time malbranque played for us there was tables as he was top of it for ages one season.

Fair enough! Should have made myself clearer!

I‘d never seen the term assist used in the media until about 15 year ago, it was a term which gained you points in fantasy football that was about it. Now it’s everywhere and it’s relevance seems to have gone through the roof for some reason. I’ve never even seen a consistent explanation to what an assist actually is.
