Lee Mason - VAR

I would put a canny whack on, if they were to get rid of VAR for a month, the howls of complaint, over the certainty of dodgy happenings would be massive

i can hear it now, the first offside goal being given
Television replays would need doing away with.

Should be a challenge system like cricket.

Sadly, peoples opinions of whether refs are any good, are whether they agree with them or not. Never gonna satisfy everyone
I hardly ever have a go at refs because it's such a tough job and any mistakes they make are honest mistakes and 95/100 you can understand why they made the decision they did. But I just think Mason made bad decisions pretty much every game I saw him. One that sticks in mind was Fellaini blocking Danny Rose and sent him flying 90° from the angle he was running. Mason booked Rose for diving.

An interesting VAR comparison with Rugby Union in the recent 6N Irl-Fra game. France tighthead prop Uini Atonio went in on Rob Herring and his shoulder slid up almost instantly to eventually connect with Herring’s jaw. It happened in a split second.

It was a red card all day long to us watching, the type of incident that World Rugby is looking to banish from the sport.

With the assistance of the video ref, the on-field ref applied the letter of the (complicated) tackle law and just gave a yellow. The mic captured his rationale and (legally) he was spot on. But the law is inadequate in hindsight. Rob Herring went off for a HIA and basically suffered a brain injury.

The thing is that Football’s offside law is daft when a fingernail offside counts as a foul. Having to draw lines on the VAR screen to measure millimetres is just ridiculous.

When the law is plainly an ass – change the law.

In generlal, the video reffing works very well in rugby. No great complaints.

I wish they'd all forget to draw the bloody lines. We might stop ruling offside by a toenail in that case.
Aye lets go back to yards offside or completely missing that another player did something that would have reversed the decision. Sadly it's not about the match day fans any more as it's more about the £millions in the game and the global TV fans not seeing constant incorrect decisions. Football as we knew it has been taken away from the match day fan as they are less of the overall revenue of a club.

In that 2nd post of mine I quoted previously they could get rid of all incorrect offside decisions with the margin of error. That means more limbs celebrations but without having it ruled offside when it is still debatable. The semi-automated stuff is much quicker than manual VAR offsides so fans at the match will also know quicker that it's offside.

I love your posts but I feel like I need to take a deep breath and strap myself in before I read them
I explain them in detail as not everyone may grasp it from a more concise version. I'm also on a keyboard sometimes so I can type quite fast and it doesn't like that much on a big screen compared to a phone.

VAR has made six incorrect interventions in Premier League this season, 42 decisions deemed correct.22 Dec 2022
.

VAR has been viewed as a broad success by many people within the world of soccer. To keep our focus on the UK, according to the Premier League website, the introduction of VAR in 2019/20 increased the percentage of correct key match decisions from 82% the previous season to 94%.22 Jan 2023
Yet this is what people want to go back to. This is why VAR came about in the first place, fans, players, managers, TV pundits, media etc all complaining about incorrect decisions. It's here to stay so it's time to accept it rather than constantly say "get rid" which I wanted at first but now just accept it's here to stay. They know the "get rid" voice will fade over time as kids who started going to footy with VAR become more of the match day fan. People say celebrations are now watered down but I don't think they are. It's not every goal scored has a VAR intervention (anyone know what percentage VAR holds up play?) and you see fans going mad but then VAR is checking for offside. In the past the lino flags and celebrations are nipped in the bud whereas now fans can celebrate again or opposing fans if it is offside so it's still emotional one way or another.

Offside is changing, just not here yet as I explain HERE

Ah! Didn't know that. Thanks for the explanation.
Hoy in the margin of error based on players speed between the previous frames then it could mean they don't ever disallow a goal incorrectly for offside. I'd rather see debatable goals allowed to be onside rather than being disallowed the way it is now with a smaller margin of error. Though we'd probably see it less in our favour in the Premier League unless we score more than we concede

The fact 12 people so far liked this post below shows they're not aware of the upcoming changes with the semi automated offside (LINK) which works in seconds. Hence my tedious posts on the subject @redandwhiterob to spread the word so get spreading ;)

Always said that there’s no need for lines. Give them 5 or 10 seconds to look with the naked eye and make a call. If it takes longer and the need for lines to be drawn then it obviously too tight and the benefit of the doubt should go to the attacking team.

He made a mistake because there's such a clamour to 'get on with it' they spent so long on one offside they didn't want to spend any longer on the other one. It's a poor mistake but to lose his job or to have to walk is ridiculous
So he’s just left var? Sounds like he’s not a ref at all no more ?
Should have just been demoted to football league

The Mag lad on the Ramble was saying use ai. Seems sensible?
I like the wall of mist that BT use in their european matches. Shows quite clearly which bit of the body is furthest forward on each player.
It's the semi-automated system and it's not BT, it's FIFA. It's been used in the World Cup, Champions League and started being used in Serie A just recently on Jan 27th but not yet in the PL (LINK with plenty info for the last time as I feel like Hettonlass )

Just get rid of offside. But book obvious goal hanging.

Off topic but this reminds me of what a lad I worked with for a time, told me about growing up in Tipton, and playing football in the street/park with Steve Bull.

"He (Bull) supported the Baggies and was a goal hanging twat even then".

I didn't see the incident in question, but Peter Walton on BT and Chris Foy on Amazon, as pundits, seem to go out of the way to back a referee's decision - it could be Lee Mason did the same, which undermined the reason for using VAR effectively.

Sitting watching rugby just now. You hear the interjections by the video ref and the discussion with the ref. Works perfectly and they get decisions right and quickly.

How can a bigger, wealthier sport like football make such a pig’s ear of it?
They're trialling discussions as I said in the "Crisis VAR" thread I keep linking but I'll just hoy up the link to The Athletic article instead

You're a very knowledgeable bloke. Surprised to see you have been on here less than a year.
We could have done with you on board a long time ago!
That's very kind of you 👍
Best regards, Lee Mason
