There was a thread on here a week or so about Botman going to Barcelona. Dunno if it was based on fact or just another SMB theory. If so that'll be for good money. Tripper has been their best player apparently. Burn and Pope have helped them to top 3. They've been good buys.

Pope, Burn, Trippier were around 10 mill each. We all know that is absolutely nowhere elite money and are absolute bargains.
Botman at 35mill is still not elite money in this day and age.
Each of them are hugely performing well above their fees and have been total steals at those measley prices.

Trippier 33 this year and starting to drop off for me like. Agree about Burn and Pope. Botman is playing like a 35million player. Some other very good players and others who are a bit meh.

It would be my hope that Newcastle keep spending big on players like Gordon

The lad is 21 and already a premier league regular. Chelsea was going to pay 60 million for him so I think we have a fair deal and it may look like a bargain if Eddie Howe can get his potential honed.

To be fair I thought you’d paid more for pope. Still they aren’t elite quality players and they won’t be moving to elite teams any time soon. Trippier’s wage will be ridiculous too.

I’ll be a lot more worried if you hold onto a CL spot. I genuinely don’t think you have the quality but it’s a transition year for a few of the usual suspects. I don’t see the grind-out football that Howe has you playing making a sustained breakthrough, and to take it back on topic, Gordon is a middling player that you’re overpaying for. The difficulty for you will be disposing of the misses. Massive wages and long-term subsidies are corrosive.

Depends what you define as top elite players ? If you’re referring to likes of De’Bruyne, Harland then no they’re not.
But nether the less, they’ve been superb bargains and are playing in a system / team under great management that is getting the best out of them. It’s no fluke we’re in 3rd and looking like a Wembley final.
Time will tell on Gordon. The powers that be who are currently recruiting superbly have chased him last 2 windows clearly want him so I’ve full trust in them based on their dealings so far.
The current management system have progressed each player they have and I expect Gordon to be no different.

Tbf Pope was always a steal at that price. A lad at work (mag) asked what I thought of him when they signed him and I said straight away "absolute bargain".

Direct, runs at defenders, skilful, capable of a bit of magic. Lacks consistent end product and goals to make him elite level. But he’s a gifted and talented footballer. He gets people off their seat.

Put it this way, I bet your view would change if it was announced that he was signing for Sunderland tomorrow morning.

I was of the kind he was a bit shaky and with Darlow and Dubraka it wasn’t a position to prioritise. Totally proved me wrong and he hasn’t put a foot / hand wrong so far.
