I've seen Phillips being very complimentary about Makin in interviews since he retired, both as a player and a team mate. It wasn't true. They're never true.

Wish I could find the piece cos I've tried but failed but I vividly remember when Keane was manager he spoke about how north-east fans have an unusual appetite for unfounded rumours - both creating them and believing them. He reckoned it wasn't just something he discovered when he managed us but we are well known for it and even when he was at Man U they used to be confused by it.
