1 point off the playoffs

I don’t agree with first point mind

We can only be sustainable as a club by selling players for big profit and reinvesting. I am not sure how you expect us to compete otherwise

The main reason we never had sustained success in the PL was our recruitment, we could never sell players for profit and then couldn’t give them away, all the time fans demanded short spend more and more money

It nearly bankrupt us

Hate to say it but here goes .... so it was the fan’s fault?

If we get promoted do we not suddenly have a lot of premiership money to spend on an improving team where the players of value stay with us rather than go to a another premiership club.
Not sure you read what I said

Eh? No, fans fault?

You blamed the fans for demanding spend Short spend on transfers

No he spent it but they wrong to

Surely even you agree we spent far too much? We nearly went under mate

Selling players is absolutely vital for our existence

It’s not football manager
Going up would be amazing like, and only a good thing.

You’re probably right but I’m fearful that’s all

Usually leads to chaos and chasing things you can’t sustain and fans kicking off etc

I agree all right just it wasn’t the fans to blame for incompetent management of the club. That all sat at Shorts door.

Didn’t we ’buy high, sell low’ under Short? There’s no reason why we’d repeat that under the current owners, and in fact evidence to date suggests that would be the opposite of their strategy.

Is anyone genuinely, honestly hoping we don’t get promoted this season? I can’t get my head around that.

Aye lets go up and get whacked off everyone then come down.
as opposed to what, stay in the championship for 4 or 5 seasons, then going up and getting whacked off everyone and come straight back down, not for me thanks, if we have a chance of going up at the end of the season either automatically or via the play offs then i hope we take it. minimum £100m for going up and three years parachute payments which will see us have a much better squad which will have the capability to compete in the top tier.
anyone not wanting promotion as soon as possible really needs to get a little ambition, surely the reason we all spend our hard earned money to watch them is to see them as high up the ladder as possible, if anyone wants less then save your cash and support south shields, Gateshead or Hartlepool

Still a long way to go. The league is tight, so a couple of bad results and we are looking over our shoulder.

Although the playoffs would be great, the priority has always been to re-establish ourselves at this level.

Come May, if we are sitting 12th or above, it’s been a successful season

If we did go up we'd deserve to be one of the promoted teams over the whole season. We'd stand as good a chance as anyone in the same position. The money for getting in the prem and even the parachute paymwnts will secure a better future for investing. We wouldn't be worried about paying Stewart the going rate either etc

Agree - recruitment is still far from perfect but it’s definitely different and likely to increase the revenue brought in. It then needs reinvested well enough to keep improving and/or you hit the jackpot with 5 or 6 18 year olds at the level of Pickford/Henderson all getting into the 1st team around the same time. Similar to Man Utd when Giggs, Beckham, Butt, Gary and Phil Neville all broke through but that’s a once in a lifetime chance of happening.

Very difficult process though if you look at say Southampton who have brought through some great players at different times, recruited well over the last 10 years (Mane, VVD etc) sold for profits but are now heading for relegation.

short appointed a director of football operations who had never worked in football a day in his life prior to joining, and hasnt worked in football since. So not surprising our scouting was terrible..in truth the club wildly over acheieved during that time given the incompetence of the people running it

We didnt spend too much under Short, we spent too much on shite.

A new manager every season wanting his own players/ a new hair brained scheme from Short EG the Udinese model.

The problem was not how much we spent but what we spent it on.

The clubs in the best position its been in since Keanes first season.
