Durham CCC - Head Coach

Who reckons it will be an Australian head coach then
Also head from an inside source Durham were desperate to sign Michael Hogan when they found out he wasn’t retiring. Would’ve been such a good signing. Imagine him and Rushworth bowling at the Riverside together if both had been persuaded. Or maybe Rushy didn’t like the idea of another legend playing with him?

Didn't Botham say that the appointment wouldn't be in house at one of the members forums, or am I imagining that?

@GordonMuchallNo1Fan might know better than me what was said at the members get together.
Pretty sure it was at one of the Durham Defender pie and pea talks in September that he said this....mind you he also claimed that YCCC were going to be hit with some real draconian measures.🤔
One of the reasons why i would like to see the appointment kept in house and also why i mentioned Lees taking up the vacancy of the one day captaincy so we can start planning fir the season during the winter.
Speaking of Lees - it's good to see he's committed himself to the club until at least the end of 2025.

Exactly what I was going to say aye. And tbf I think I said at the time Botham is prone to opening his mouth and whatever comes out is no more gospel that what gets said on here

If the appointment is made from outside the club I wonder where that leaves Neil Killeen?

I'd like to see him given the job as he's obviously well thought of by the ECB. He's been given a number of coaching roles with various squads now, and he's currently part of the Lions coaching staff out in the UAE.

Idk I still think something behind the scenes has gone on too. I’ve seen people say he’s got kids etc so surely you’d want to spend as much time with them and not be 3-4 hours away? I just think there’s something more behind it all and this way it’s just an easier goodbye to a Durham legend. But then again it’s only me thinking this!!!

Yes but look at how he did in the One day comp. Might be a good assistant

I was thinking more along the lines of him being assistant head coach for the last 4 seasons under Franklin, surely natural progression would mean him taking over the top job when it became vacant.

I wouldn't blame him for the poor showing in the one day cup this year, we were missing a few players and some of our senior players weren't at their best.

If he's overlooked again I wonder how keen he'll be to stay, he may think he has a better chance of a head coach job elsewhere. I don't know of course, it's just speculation on my part.

He might not want head coach mind. Might want to be full time at the ECB

Colly has the right idea, no doubt he’s had countless offers but hes just in the England dressing room in every big cricket moment going back to 2004 basically.
I think the drawback with that job is that I'm fairly certain it's only on a series by series basis for the assistant coaches, not long term. As long as the team is successful then it's not a problem, but a couple of bad results could mean a change in the coaching staff.

The bigger problem with appointing a top coach at County level is the number of franchise comps around the world. If a coach is lucky enough to get a couple of those jobs a year then they'll make more than a full time county coach while putting in a lot less hours.

I was reading a piece in the cricketer saying basically how the whole coaching set up in CC is not fit for purpose for those very reasons and directors of cricket might just appoint coaches for specific competitions going forward

Also considered at an earlier stage for the women’s role was Ryan Campbell, the Australian who has coached the Netherlands men’s team in recent years. He is favourite to replace James Franklin as Durham head coach, however.
