Sunderland will face Saudi Arabian opposition Al Shabab in Friendly (poll in Parsnip)

Is that the 'Central Army Sports Club' team, 75% owned by VEB, a Russian bank sanctioned since February? The same VEB whose chairman is Igor Shuvalov, a man who moved into that position in May 2018 having previously been First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia?

I get the point you're making, but CSKA (nicknamed 'the Army Men' in Russian) may not be the best club to illustrate of that point.
I think it illustrates his point perfectly other than he didn't realise the link to the regime that you supplied for him. I think most successful sporting teams in Russia have links to the army.

I can't be bothered to read through the whole thread but can someone tell me why we should be annoyed with this and how it's linked to sports washing?

No idea who the team is mind, so I could be missing some link between the Saudi state and this club we're playing.

As much as people (rightly) praise the recruitment under the Dreyfus regime they've consistently been an utter shitshow when it comes to the PR side of things.

Every single person involved in signing that off is an absolute clownshoe.
They are basically trying to piggy back the attention the mags get from their Saudi links and its absolutely abhorrent.

This argument of “well nobody cared about it before the Newcastle takeover” is ridiculous. If someone now knows more about human rights and Saudi Arabia’s history with it then it’s one more person educated about it as far as I’m concerned. It doesn’t make anyone wrong because they didn’t know enough about it one, two or three years ago.

Not for me at all this friendly, particularly not with the links mentioned earlier. disappointing our club is affiliating ourselves with the region at all, not least during this World Cup.

Didn’t Watford supporters manage to get a preseason friendly with Qatar cancelled after kicking off? Really hope the club sees sense on this one.
