Crawley finished?

I’m going to stick my neck out and say he will still be opening next summer in the Ashes.

Put it this way, he would for me, even if he averages single figures between now and then, if the alternative is Rory Burns.

Yet Burns' record against Australia is broadly the same as Crawley's is in county cricket. That said Crawley will tour now and has a great opportunity on flat pitches to fill his boots. I hope he does.

So do I. I think we both know where we stand on the Burns/Crawley debate so no point going over old ground, suffice to say Burns averaged 12.83 in his last series against Australia, and in my view, there is no coming back from that.

Crawley stays for me. Criticism over the top, no opposition opener averaging much more this season. The median average of all the openers we’ve tried is roughly 26…which is what he averages, yet 2 or 3 times this summer he’s got the team off to a flyer, I can see why they stick with him. I see people calling for Burns..Sibley etc…they aren’t going to be picked. What is the point of bringing them back when they average only 2 or 3 more.

He absolutely needs more runs but I can totally understand why Stokes and McCullum will stick with him for Pakistan. At the end of the day we’ve won 6 out of 7 and both openers have played a part in some of those wins.

The only argument for me is could brooks ane Duckett averaging over 30 opening, I think that’s possible. But as for the usual suspects we’ve tried? Time to move on for me. They are limited cricketers.

Not sure 1 fifty all summer warrants keeping your place he's been very lucky he's friends with key

It doesn’t, but it’s the old debate, it’s not always down to whether what you doing merits your place, but to do with whether the other options are considered better.

That has to be a massive factor in Crawley keeping his place.

That said he has been lucky that the new regime has been very loyal, hopefully he know repays that loyalty.

Its a fair argument - a little stronger after getting some runs in the last test. Its the lack of alternatives that causes the debate - form me Lees is no better than the gaggle we have tried in the past put hes showing some bottle and they will probably stick with him. I think Jennings would score plenty on flat pitches in the winter so might be an option but would be guaranteed to fail in the summer as he always does when its nipping around. No easy solution and its why they are being patient with Crawley.
