Durham’s Next Boss

Who do you want? Or who do you think is realistic?

I’ve heard Michael Di Venuto is out of work…
Divo would be the dream appointment and afaia he's been out of work since he left his Aussie coaching role. Whether he's be prepared to work under North would be problematic. He left here for non- cricketing reasons but I'm sure he enjoyed his time here. Love to think he has "unfinished business here". His appointment would massively lift the moral of both players and members.

What’s his record like…? 🤔

Nixon won the Caribbean T20 twice in 3 years and was successful in the recent Bangladesh T20 and is highly respected in this country and beyond. He's done a good job at Leicestershire developing players. Progressed in the One Day Cup this year and as far as I'm concerned progressed in the T20 this year also. Goes without saying Leicestershire are very much a feeder club in red ball cricket but they're a team we failed to beat and I feel as though Nixon could help us like Arthur has helped progress Derbyshire. He's well thought of at Leicestershire though which counts for a lot. I think he could do a lot of good repairing the relationship between club and members which has grown apart in recent years under Franklin and North, both of whom have been an absolute disaster at Durham. I don't think Killeen is the answer also.

Nixon/Gidman/Walker I'd be happy with and I believe that is a realistic & I'd be happy with that.

MDV/Collingwood I have seen folk mention that previously, I don't think either are realistic.

My concern is Marcus North is likely to have a big say in this decision, I'd like to see him leave the club.

Why do you keep talking about T20 a format you openly say you aren't interested in, why don't you talk about his record in the most important format

He loved it here, the club handled his departure very poorly as they did with Benks. Got so many good stories about MDV and his kindness and time he took out for myself, my wife and a couple of close friends especially just before he departed and dropped a sack full of kit off for us to share out . Got a few of his county shirts and one of his T20 jumpers which of course he never used, they have pride and place at home.

He was especially kind to a friend and his son (who posts on here) and always remember just before he departed he turned up to watch the young lad (at the time, he's 21 now), play in an under 11 game at Marsden. He didn't have to do that but a sign out what an absolute gent he was both on and off the field.

When he returned as Surrey coach he made a point of going over to speak to my wife who at the time was in a wheelchair and asked how she was etc. A really fine man who we would both love back at Durham but I just can't see it happening.

Fond memories, love sharing good stories like that, Benks was just as kind and great. Both absolutely class acts for Durham.

I really don't know you is good and who isn't, but there's a type of person I'd rather goo for and that's someone in the Geoff Cook mold.
Someone who knows County Cricket
Someone who knows or has a good understanding of local cricket in general but especially in the North East
Someone who has a good eye for young talent.

Couple that with a club policy to develop and maintain a strong academy.

Paul Collingwood would fit at least 2 of those criteria, but I'm not sure about the ability to develop talent and maybe he's got his eyes on a bigger role elsewhere.

Neil Killen would be a front runner I think.
John Windows ought to be considered too.

I'm not particularly interested in a marquee name it's having the right attributes that counts for me.

I see Gordon is saying Nixon. Paul Nixon from Leics? Why would he want to come here when he's doing great where he is? He'll no doubt be looking for his next move to be a step up but Durham is at best a step on the same level. So I think there's no chance of that.

Great job of no wins in the main format

I suspect it'll be killeen but sadly, and this isn't meant as a criticism on him, i think it'll be him because it'll be cheaper and less effort for north rather than because he's the best candidate.

i hope he IS the best candidate, there's alot of reasons why he could be an excellent coach for durham.. my only real criticism is i'd rather have someone who'll be at durham all year round rather than buggering off to coach in the 16.4 - and if you're being employed by a county i don't think that's too much to ask

with the lasses welsh 16.4 team this year, no idea if he's done any other coaching?
Currently England women Performance coach, he's one of the names linked with taking over the women's head coach role when the current coach steps down at the end of the summer

Define great for me please?

Given how far adrift they are from the rest of the pack in the Championship… 🤔

Is that how low the bar is now? Getting blokes from teams we couldn’t beat?

How are they doing in the proper cricket? How many wooden spoons in a row will this years be?? You speak of ‘developing players’, how many have gone on to play for England?

No thanks, the bloke is as much of a failure as the bloke who’s departure you’ve been celebrating.
