Paul Coughlin

Lucky lad, I had basically given up on him, all due to his fitness record.

Disappointed in Salisbury's play during the last few years, watching him in his first and second year here I thought he was great. Mind you I thought Weighell was too and he was binned.

Hmm, just comparing Weighell and Coggers mentally, my memory without looking at any stats, would have put Weighell's contribution on the pitch as being ahead of Cogger's! Someone tell me I'm wrong!

Might be worthwhile him sacking off bowling for a while as he's still a handy batsmen
I can remember his maiden Championship century against Worcs at the Riverside in June and his recent whirlwind 77 in the RL50 against Gloucs but can't remember anything about his bowling this season other than me thinking it looked like he could have a case of the yips.

So I agree with you.

Probably don't agree despite rating weighell as much as anyone. At their best coughlin has more about him with bat and ball. Neither had/have too much consistency or luck with injuries. Think coughlin is still a good bat but hasn't had the chance to keep any rhythm to be a useful/reliable bowler.

Not sure if weighell has got back on track so he may be a better player now, no idea on that

I'm also not really one for stats so no idea if I'm miles off the mark, just based on eye tests

Coughlin is a better white ball cricketer IMO.

Getting shot of Eckersley and Salisbury makes you wonder if there are issues with the wage bill. They were never going to set the world on fire but were solid squad players. Even with young players breaking through, we're a bit thin if we get injuries, or lose players to England. The current leadership at the club don't seem to care about competing in domestic tournaments TBH, it's all about the academy talent now.

At the same time, they would probably rather be at a club where they're getting opportunities so it might be there choice more than ours. Especially if they don't get on or feel valued with/by the coaching staff

Pretty much why Salisbury has left, to get more first team opportunities

That doesn't seem to fit. Salisbury did get chances earlier this season but didn't take them, his effectiveness seems to have dropped over the past couple of years. So if he's getting the chance but not taking them you'd say that would be down to him. Same for Eckersey.
And look who has replaced them, 2 lads from the academy with little previous experience and MacAlinden and Macintosh have impressed.
I've been a supporter of both those lads and I'd much rather they stay, but they have had their chances.

Take the fact that Salisbury wasn't in a match squad then after coggers got injured in the warm up and Salisbury was hoyed straight in ahead of Gibson and possibly Killeen who were in the squad.

I don't agree with you but that's fine.. eckers is a different situation afaik.

Clearly neither fancied, can't fault either for wanting away

Bizarre decision to let Poynter go if we didn't fancy Eckersley.

Mackintosh is only 19 and we're picking a part time keeper if he gets injured or picked for Scotland.

Eckersley is retiring from cricket isn't he? Not sure we could have predicted that a year ago when Poynter was released.

Ollie Robinson has been playing in ODC for Kent, so hopefully that deal is still on.

Been impressed by Mackintosh but it’s clear we need another keeper for the reasons @smoker has pointed out. We can’t rely on part timers to stand in - it’s a specialist position. Robinson may of course be the answer.

Will we be in the market for a senior seamer to replace Salisbury? Will that depend on how much we will see of Potts and Carse?

I suspect that although the accounts look healthy (well at least to my untrained eye), we need to show a reasonable profit/reserves as part of the deal to get the ECB/Council share of the funding for the hotel and stadium development and therefore we aren’t in a position to splash the cash on player contracts.

Is he? We've heard nowt from the club. If that's the case I'd at least expect him to see out his contract or the season but the story is he is no longer a Durham player, so we have only got one, 19 year old, specialist wicket keeper.

Yes we have. On 23rd August: “Durham Cricket can also announce that Ned Eckersley has left the club following the completion of his contract”. Why would they report or even know about his next move after he has left? It’s none of their business. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The story was that he was going to but since then send he's decided to crack on for a bit and look for a new club.

There was very little point him seeing out his contract as he was never going to get picked anyway

Yeah didn’t he say on commentary at a game for Leicestershire that he was on the look out for a new club after changing his mind about studying? Maybe Leicester will take him again?

Also I had heard that Franklin and Salisbury didn’t get along at all so guessing he was another to get pushed out by him. Does leave us very light in the bowling department now especially if Potts/Carse are away with England and then only McAlindon, Raine, Rushworth, Gibson and Coughlin. If any of them were to get injured we’d be awfully light, who would be next in from the academy for championship?

Also what’s the crack with Bedingham? Has anyone heard is he still injured or is he leaving due to getting frustrated with the head coach or the team losing?
