I think this appointment is poor. Lots of others do for football reasons too (some will get nastily personal which is obviously unreasonable). We’re being sold a vision about modernity, youth, development and long termism. Mowbray has quite a dour persona, has not spoken kindly of the club in the past, has a pretty mediocre record and has not been liked as a manager by most clubs he’s been at (despite him being loved as a player at Boro and Celtic).

Does the appointment feel brave and optimistic? Does it feel ambitious? Does is it feel fresh and well researched? Does it feel as though it’s imaginative? Does it seem well researched and data driven? To me, the answer is no to all of the above and that’s a bit of a let down give what the supposed vision of the club is. Mowbray is local, available, and friends with Harvey. It feels every bit like an appointment the old regime would have made.

It feels very flat to me

Aside from that Ive seen him a couple of times on Soccer Sunday with Kamara in the past and he seemed quite hostile towards SAFC. It’s not one of the key reasons why I wouldn’t want him like. That’s just a bit of fluff really.

The reasons why managers work or don’t work are all over the place. There’s been few that I’ve been sure would be a failure. Only Parky in recent times - and even he managed a 14 game unbeaten run or whatever it was. Most coaches or managers are absolute frauds in the main (one way or another). The most important thing is to make sure you’ve got good players.

Uninspiring choice but I suppose the club acting swiftly is a positive. Sunderland caretaker managers haven't got a good record so getting a permanent appointment in sharpish was imperative. Since the 80’s the record with caretakers is something like 2 wins in 20 odd games, and both of those were end of season dead-rubbers with the club already relegated.

Exactly. Some kind of lower mid table this year and a top half finish next year would be brilliant. Then if progress halts look to a more ‘exciting’ name. At the minute the risk of some totally unproven manager outweighs the unlikely reward imo.

I think Alex Neil to Mowbray is probably worth about 5 league places. So I reckon we'll finish about 14th, 15th now.

And you know what: that's ok. Honestly. The wheels could really come off after something like that snake did to us on Friday. But with Mowbray, they probably won't. So yeah, I'd be annoyed with 14th, 15th on Friday. We looked set for better. But it's a massive blow and we need to focus on consolidating now. I am well behind a risk averse appointment. We can't go down again. Regroup in the summer.

Regroup in the summer? We're still in August! We don't need anyone to steady the ship or have a safe option, we're already doing fine (even after AN left) and we've got almost a full season ahead of us.

The narrative that this has been one of the most shambolic few days in the club's history culminating in an up and coming manager who everybody was behind and thought would be here for a good few years to one who literally NOBODY would have been happy about in any other circumstance.

My gut feeling from reading about him is that he is absolutely nothing like Parkinson at all.

I think he will do well myself and will keep the good vibe going.
