Over Rates

I know there was some annoyance during the India Test Match around this and I notice just now in the Sri Lanka v Australia game that in the first session of Day 4 the Aussies have bowled just 24 overs. Bearing in mind 15 of those overs were bowled by spinners. A comment on the Cricinfo commentary feed from a viewer states that the Aussies are 10 (TEN) overs behind on the overall run rate, which is hideous when you consider they've sent down 173 overs and only 53 of them were from pace bowlers. This is an absolute disgrace. Its high time the punishment for slow over rates was much more severe than it currently is.

Aussies are 1-0 up and this is the final game of the Series, so of course a slow over rate in a game they probably can't win anymore suits them in their quest for a draw.

Could not agree more, thought for years that it is short changing loyal fans who are paying more and more money to watch cricket.

Cricket fans simply deserve better.

I thought over rates were bad generally but the example you have gave absolutely a joke.

My idea would be that overs not bowled become free hit overs with one day wide conditions in place
Need to ensure batting time wasting is taken into account though so it does not become a tactic

I’d say 10 runs per day for every over not bowled. As a minimum.
A good few years ago I stood in for a couple of games while our regular team captain was away. There'd been a few league committee meetings regarding over rates and the umpires had been told to be much stricter in that regard - the weekend I was skipper was one of the first following the new directive.

We'd been playing an hour and one of the umpires called me over and told me to keep an eye on my team's over rate - I looked at the scorebox and we had bowled 18 overs!

I looked at him, shook my head and walked away. 18 overs in an hour and he was warning me off. People watching test matches and first-class games would love to see that over rate.

Aye, it’s beyond a joke that the can’t bowl 15 overs an hour in Tests.

I’ve never understood why they can’t just play until they’ve completed the allotment either. The extra half hour always gets used and they NEVER seem to be able to get the overs in.

The counties bowl 96 in a day, if after the extra half hour in Tests there’s still 2/3/4 overs or whatever left - just play on 🤷‍♂️

Surely if the fuckers are still in the field after 7 they’ll sharp get sick of that and quicken up. There is absolutely no deterrent worth a wank presently to sort this out.

That case in Sri Lanka I mentioned today was a joke. TEN overs behind in an innings where you’d bowled predominantly spin 🤦‍♂️. I went for a run during the morning session and I’d covered 5k in the time it took them to bowl 6 overs. I’m no Mo Farah either.
