Kalvin Phillips signing for Manchester City

Okay mate. I dont think anybody is saying Leeds should be celebrating but its a decent fee and it could be a bigger loss like a 20 goal a season striker.

I agree with the poster who said raphinha would be a bigger loss.
Given they havent got a 20 goal striker I don't get your reasoning tbh mate. He's a massively important player for them even if he is 'only' a defensive midfielder.

Not convinced - but we shall see. Maybe Pep seems something in him. 45m is a lot to be making up the numbers, but at the same time, are you really going to be buying a top 10 midfielder in the world at that price? no.

Not sure what to make of it.

Okay then, pointless going round and round in circles then.

Simply saying its a position where you can get quality. How much did bissouma cost Brighton for example? Its a loss for them but he's not Declan rice or Rodri.
Who did they have last year that I'm missing?
Ake, delap maybe?

You can also just name like 2 less players if you only have 6.

He's a huge loss for them. He's a quality player. Their best player imo. It's all well and good saying get a replacement in, as we know it's never that easy to get better.

To Leeds it's like City or West Ham losing Rodri or Rice.

I haven't a clue. Why do you think they've signed him?

I don’t think that he’ll start 20 games as I think Rodri is a lot more accomplished.

I don’t know, I don’t see him developing at 26 by starting less games than he would at leeds.

City sign plenty of players for high fee’s that don’t get much playing time.

Ake counts as a homegrown player doesnt he having spent 3 years or more at Chelsea before he turned 21. Mind you, with all the new rules and that, I stand to be corrected.

That's on the club though. You're never going to keep your best players and need to have a plan. He's been rumoured to be away for a year, they've had time to plan.

Ah is it just players who came through the English youth system?

I think they're signing him to play games. City play a lot more games than Leeds over a season tbf

I can see him being another Phil Neville / James Milner / Jamie Carragher type. Very good player, versatile, committed and very dependable, but never quite making it into the top echelons.

Harsh on Milner that mind. He's won the PL a few times, CL winner, youngest PL player/scorer at one point and dozens of England caps. Same with Phil Neville. I understand what you're saying they're not/weren't very influential players at the very highest level but they still had a big part play. Carragher won the CL and a quadruple with Liverpool in the early 2000s too iirc

Is he versatile? Has he played anywhere except centre midfield?

The stick is a bit bizarre, he's a very good PL player and has shown it on the international stage. You'd think they were signing a complete nobody. Guardiola probably knows what he's doing.

If Phillips goes to City he’ll start piling on the trophies and up his England caps. Not an unfair comparison at all at this stage of his career.
