Should the Chanpionship be a Franchise competition?

No.

Those pushing the idea make two assumptions which I believe to be incorrect.

1) there'll be more higher quality players which will improve the English players game

2) it will get more people interested

With fewer sides and more overseas players it would make it even harder for English players to breakthrough. They'd be forced to play in whatever minor counties league the county clubs were left with. Franchise clubs would throw their money at the same, already proven players year on year.

The idea that it would attract more fans is ludicrous. Schedule it whenever you want, unless you're going to start play at 6pm you aren't getting around the issue that the majority of red ball cricket is played during the working week.

But let's assume that there is say 5k cricket fans out there who would come out and start following the game if it was franchised. They would be countered by the thousands of current county fans who would refuse to follow a franchise which has all but put their County out of business

So in summary, no

Can’t bring myself to listen to that

It’s not even a big debate just been said by KP

We want as many people playing cricket, not less, cream will rise to the top

I’d say there is more argument for more counties considering some areas of the country don’t even have a county

People say that the top players will get there eventually they are too talented but I don’t agree, I don’t think Ben stokes gets where he is now without Durham. It’s an extreme example but he stayed in Durham when his parents went back to NZ when he was 17 years old, he wasn’t gonna play club cricket and then trial at 2nd XIs for a year

The more opportunities for first class cricketers the better. If you think of how Asian communities in this country are totally untapped too

Work on the structure higher him by all means, it’s not quite perfect there’s no point pretending that, but I do think pitches are the most important thing, if you have a good flat pitch, in terms of bowlers, you will find spinners and pace bowlers,

Would definitely be in favour of more counties. When you look at the counties map there's arguably scope to get up to 30 counties playing first class cricket (3 leagues of 10 play each other twice).

Might be poor quality first couple seasons but would even out eventually

Possibly good point though.

The important thing are the supporters both those that attend and those who support from a distance. When a club has an identity with a region it become a source of local pride - this is the best thing about football in Britain.

A franchise is only for players who get a golden ticket to riches and mega-bucks owners. They have no real association to a place, see Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders etc.

One of the things that attracted me to cricket is that it’s played by counties and not cities.

Twats like Pietersen who spent the first 25 years of his life in a different country and so hasn’t grown up with and cherished county cricket get on my nerves when they criticise it.

Pietersen would franchise his socks and underpants if he could.

For me there are too many counties which is diluting the pot, look at Australia and now Pakistan, there are I think 5 state sides in Australia and 6 I think in Pakistan. The best players in that format will rise to the top and play against other class players. This in turn strengthens “local” cricket as good local lads playing against ex or current pros, look at Trego and Clarke over the weekend, both got double hundreds, my point being if people who are boarderline not good enough even they play against people of the sameish standard. Listening to people who whore themselves around franchises around the world are not the best people to listen to when it comes to what’s best, unfortunately there only interested in pounds, dollars and rupies. The best players to play against the best players
Bearing in mind Australia in 5 times the size of Uk and has half the people, taking that into account our pool to pick from should be massive.

Australia has 1/3 the population of the UK and the majority of the country is uninhabitable
All franchise sport is bullshit and Pietersen is a f***ing arsehole

End of thread, end of the world

He's now arguing that the County XI battering new zealand proves his point about franchising

Franchise sport is bullshit and destroys the natural link between grass roots and elite sport.

India has 50+ first class teams and no.1 in the world.

Which counties are you going to vote out of existence? Durham?

Why were England so much than Australia and Pakistan in both formats up until the last few years then?

Shite. Imagine being a Rams supporter. Cleveland to LA to St Louis and then to LA.

Absolute shite
Super Bowl champions. It worked. Still let’s leave it at that. Franchise cricket is all very ipl with a billion plus cricket addicts. In the U.K. it’s just not on

them winning trophies doesnt mean it worked like

just means they are a good sports side

I’m finished on this lads. I think the nfl franchises are a success. Just my opinion but as I said it simply won’t work in English cricket , which is what this thread is about

thats my ten bobs worth

success in what sense? If Sunderland moved to London and won the league, is that a success?

maybe for the players and owner but not for the fans like.
