It was always the way mate. I remember as a 9 year old some big miner's or welder's hands picking me out of the crush at the front of the Clock Stand Paddock and lifting me on to the track around the pitch at Roker Park and in to safety along with 100's of other kids.

You never had to ask or were asked it was just taken for granted that the adults around you looked out for your saftey and when when things got a bit dangerous they took action

Not being from the area, it was the first thing that struck me when I went as a kid. The way people spoke and treat you with genuine warmth. It had a massive impact on me wanting to travel every weekend.

Said it for years, Sunderland are a class apart. My lad noticed it when he started coming on with me, how friendly and up for the craic we are.
train down from Preston was a scream yesterday, plenty of can-eradery going on

The only bother I seen yesterday was in our block 551. An old bloke was giving everyone grief for only being there to post it on Facebook. Few people had a pop at him but he was having none of it. Ended up quite heated but seemed to settle down by half time. Other than that what an impeccable display by our fans

Exactly the same for me when I moved up to the NE when i was 12 yrs old. Went to St James, Roker and Ayresome in those early days just to watch a game and the warmth / lack of hostility at Roker was certainly influential in me changing my allegiance to SAFC once I got a bit older ( I was a Forest supporter as a young kid cos I lived near there and dad supported them...i still have a soft spot for them , except when we play them )

My mum was around Covent Garden with my sister and nephew yesterday. She said that everyone there was well behaved and friendly and she was quite proud to see people from Sunderland behaving (in a time where football fans are under the microscope) and quite proud of her hometown, which is saying something as she has no interest in sport.
