C.C:: Sussex v Durham (Hove)

Final straw for Borthwick for me. Not good enough in any department. Picked as a specialist batsman but can't even get a semi respectable score on a flat wicket in a game that is practically a nailed on draw, with opposition bowlers going through the motions.

Needs to go captain the seconds and come back when he's good enough to be picked on one of his three responsibilities. Jones should take his batting place next match. Raine goes captain in absence of any other candidates (Ned poor in 2020).

And before one of the Badger brigade comes at me, I know it was an outstanding catch but the ball was not a 'jaffa' or 'ripper" just the same old story of planting his foot in the wrong place too early outside off stump.

Whatever merit there is in this, can’t see it happening any time soon.

This season's averages so far:

Shows the extent of the bowling issues as well as Badger's iffy form.

Probably right. The old combination of sunk cost fallacy and misguided sentimentality. They will wait to the end of the season when we've been demoted to a newly formed division 3, no skin off North's nose if that happens, he will still get paid.
Borthwick. What's gone wrong?

Lost form while he was at Surrey. Looks like his reflexes have dulled with age so he's either late in reading the ball or gambling while going early. He's looked much better in white ball as ball movement is more predictable and it's simply about shot selection which he was always good at.

It was a perfectly decent punt to bring him back. Lees, Dickson, Eckersley, Raine and Salisbury were all 'distressed' goods that polished up nicely. The problem was we made him captain so he's undroppable which is ridiculous as we can't move him to the seconds to regain form, which he probably needs. He never showed any aptitude for captaincy in the past, so I don't know why we gave him it, other than as a bribe to re-sign. Not removing it when it's clear he wasn't that good at it can only be a case of there being no obvious alternatives, ot he's got it written into his contract which would be facepalm stuff if true.

Great fightback from the openers, phenomenal partnership.

Nowt else to add apart from to hope the wicket at Worcester is a bit more ‘sporting’ this coming Thursday…
