Springwatch with Hellsbells

Didn't you kill a family of squirrels living in your loft a few years ago because they were annoying you? Could have spring watched those poor babies........ RIP little squirrels

I've had a camera in a bluetit box for a few years. Last year it was quite a big brood then one day I realised the chicks had not moved for a while. The parents abandoned the nest and they all died. There is a security light above the bird box and that was tilted downwards, so I think something big had been up there and scared the parents off. Magpies or a sparrowhawk perhaps.

This year just as the nest looked like it was nearing completion my camera has failed and I can't disturb the nest to have a look. I've not seen any activity in and out the box for a couple of days so I think it may have been abandoned again. Shame, we have had a number of successful years before now.

Lots of young have hatched as the Blackbirds are now collecting food.
I help them along with suet pellets in this dry weather. They get incredibly tame as they know you are not a threat.

Song Thrushes will nest as early as February with Blackbirds just a little later as early as March.

Our Nuthatch has taken up the same hole in tree as it did last year.
Fascinating to watch.
Just a suggestion, I know they worked but if you make any more boxes have the sides extend down past the floor to prevent the chances of any rain seeping in. Otherwise a good effort 8/10.

This way easier to make.
I always place them in a tree at an angle thus the water will run off 👍.
Two screws holding the top down and every autumn clean out the old nests.
Great for the birds to roost in Winter months.
Squirrels are like rats.

Rats with tails.
Devastate bird populations, particularly nest boxes and eggs.

Tree Rats I call them.

American Grey Squirrels are a nuisance and the main reason you see very few Native Red Squirrels. The greys out compete the Reds for food. habitat and also transmit 'fatal' Squirrel pox. Recent years have seen some small signs of Reds developing imunnity to the pox but its early days.

Grey squirrels are non-native and classed as vermin are they not, and can be killed lawfully? and is it not illegal to free them if once caught?

Is that her done do you think or could there be more to come ?
There could be more. I think I’ve usually had between 10 & 14.

Good news from what I posted about my bluetit box a couple of weeks ago. It is very active now, so no idea why I had not seen them about for a couple of day. I’ve tried power cycling the camera a few times and it is not coming back, so I can’t do a tit cam like @HellsBells

Took this pic in January I think, grey, red, and black squiggles being best mates.
Grey squirrel in a loft are a fire waiting to happen.

Plenty of Yellow hammers around here and with their distinctive call.
Poor picture I know but taken last week out with the dog, a Male yellow hammer ( if you can see it) :)

We don't get many up here, mate. I'm convinced that's what it was but I was on my bike. Unless someone lost their Canary.
