Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Sounds as if the Russians may have a tactical advantage currently though, certainly with Europe, and technically Russia and the US are less than 4km apart at their nearest points.
I agree our inaction in the past has given the Russians the tactical advantage atm, We basial told Putin we wont use troops to stop him by our lack of actions over the years but surely the Russians are just as scared of Nuke as we are, I cant see them crossing a red line if we put one out there?

we needed that red line, while working to defuse things, like we have done many times in the past, a show of strength, our weakness and looking divided give Putin the edge and the go ahead.

We have the moral high ground atm and feel we could use that to give Putin an out, like a No fly corridor for people to leave cities, while talks are ongoing, if we dont stand up now, when is the question?

When Belarus launched attacks and sent their troops in we could have put our foot down, as that was a "3rd" countries army joining in, we could have made the point it was escalating and if Belarus didn't stand down we would be forced to act in a defensive way.

But I am far from an expert and really have no clue how it really works in diplomatic circles, its just my feels and thoughts from what I have read in history.

Hopefully, a big hope, is once this has been sorted and settled the world looks at the whole nuclear thing and does something about it….like get rid of the whole lot. One message that is loud and clear for leaders all over the world is that people have no appetite for war, we want peace. Hopefully this will hit home with politicians and changes will be made
I he's bullied his way into taking Ukraine with the threat of nuclear weapons there's not a cat in hell's chance he will get rid of them after.

Does the little fat balding chod even have an end game where he can claim victory? He wants more territory. Okay. He takes over Ukraine. (making hard work of it). He's then got to hold it. That's going to cost. A lot. And in the grand scale of things they are a dwarf economically compared to the big hitters. It is also an undeveloped country, as a whole and by comparison. His daft threats of nukes won't wash either, as if. So I can't see how he can win tbh.

Would you have recommended we surrender to the Nazis so that no British men died in the war?
That's not a good comparison in fairness. Germany v GB was a close match up. This is no contest.
This is more like GB v Ireland in the 1920s.
In that case Ireland made a massive compromise to stop the country being razed to the ground.
I think the similar will happen now, it's not fair but so what, I've seen tons of unfair wars in my lifetime and I ain't that old.

Nikita Mazepin banned from driving at the British Grand Prix this year.

Looks like he can drive at other races as long as he has a neutral flag.

Given that his rich dad has close links with Putin it doesn’t exactly scream “sanction”. Good on Motorsport U.K. though.

But what does he want? He can seize the territory of Ukraine, but there are 45 million people living there, the vast majority of them hate him, and everything he stands for. How do you control them?, the country is bigger than France. there would be massive civil unrest, resulting in mass casualties on both sides resulting in international sanctions being maintained. Russian economy would collapse, mass demonstrations etc., eventually Putin would be overthrown.
I think this is the USA's end game, it suits them all ways, unfortunately the Ukrainians take the hammer for it, but it leaves America ( and China) out of the fight, but ready to take advantage of the demise of Russia. It keeps the bear in the cage for the foreseeable future

Well that was fair few pages of waffle to get through while it reverted back to it was like in the Politics forum. I might as well post this as obviously shit is still going on in Ukraine but thankfully there doesn't seem to have been any fresh updates from this morning that has been further bad news for Ukrainians from what I've seen. It isn't on wiki any more though in case someone goes looking.

Couldn't that subject for example be in its own thread in the Politics forum and people can go to town on each other in there without filling this thread with tit for tat? Some posters on here just like to say what they want, when they want and treat this thread as a big soap box but I just skip through it now and will only make this one comment also.
Plenty of hypocrites in the tory ranks who have enjoyed the benefits of Russian money and the associated benefits in winning votes and elections it brought but now we have to keep quiet because the Russians are now bad. Fair enough.

You have some likes from the tory apologists so well done.

Its the people of Ukraine i feel sorry for.

Hopefully their economy completely tanks soon. Leave the sanctions in place and force them to the table. When they realise the aren’t a superpower anymore because they’ve had to scrap their fleet and armed forces they’ll capitulate and be forced to disarm their nukes in order for sanctions to be lifted.

Or sell them to some smsosgy fuckers in the ME.

My point was though that they have hypersonic missiles which potentially give you the chance to launch a preemptive strike as they can evade detection systems.

BBC4 repeated an interesting documentary last night called ‘Putin: The New Tsar’, which was first shown in 2018. It features interviews with his former advisors and rival Russian politicians and paints a picture of a narcissist and murdering megalomaniac who’s widely admired by the people of Russia for making their country “great” again.

Having watched it myself and seen how he’s got where he is today, it seems unlikely to me that he’s going to back down in Ukraine now. The documentary is on iPlayer.
