I agree our inaction in the past has given the Russians the tactical advantage atm, We basial told Putin we wont use troops to stop him by our lack of actions over the years but surely the Russians are just as scared of Nuke as we are, I cant see them crossing a red line if we put one out there?Sounds as if the Russians may have a tactical advantage currently though, certainly with Europe, and technically Russia and the US are less than 4km apart at their nearest points.
we needed that red line, while working to defuse things, like we have done many times in the past, a show of strength, our weakness and looking divided give Putin the edge and the go ahead.
We have the moral high ground atm and feel we could use that to give Putin an out, like a No fly corridor for people to leave cities, while talks are ongoing, if we dont stand up now, when is the question?
When Belarus launched attacks and sent their troops in we could have put our foot down, as that was a "3rd" countries army joining in, we could have made the point it was escalating and if Belarus didn't stand down we would be forced to act in a defensive way.
But I am far from an expert and really have no clue how it really works in diplomatic circles, its just my feels and thoughts from what I have read in history.
