Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

I think he has lost no matter what happens from here. Russia will face sanctions for hopefully as long as Putin remains in charge. He will see the might of his country wilt and whither due to his own bloodlust and arrogance. While, unless it becomes part of Russia, Ukraine will align itself with the west politically, and will become part of a successful trading block and will receive a lot of funds for redevelopment.
Agreed. Economically looking sick. To continue as he is he'd need to spunk loads on military. That's wasted cash as it generates nowt. To afford it he'd need to cut back massively on consumption costs, and in doing so push his people into even greater levels of poverty. A sure vote winner.

Unfortunately, I think we will see this playing out over a number of years. Sanctions will increase gradually to put a lot of pressure on Putin domestically. Thats the only way we can do things without playing a global endgame with no winners.

One of the options we have is for a division of the country between an independent Ukraine and a Russian controlled sector. This would most likely satisfy neither party, but the shelling can only be endured for so long.

In the time he is still in power, the west will have to try to pivot away from dependency on Russia for energy and as many commodities as possible.

NATO and the EU will both increase their membership numbers (there’s safety in numbers after all). We will most likely enter into a second Cold War until Putin is replaced by someone more moderate.
that's the best case scenario, and seems sadly similar to where we've been before.

It isn’t a moot point. It’s a very valid comparison - a hostile European power wanting to invade other European states.

If you would rather live under the rule of an invading power, than contest your freedom then that’s fine, that’s your individual choice, but I think it is likely to be a minority view.

Letting him have Ukraine simply means the 40-odd million people there are subjugated to what could well be brutal Russian rule.

I respect that preservation of life is a noble cause but at some point you have to surely ask yourself, what’s more important.

People surely held your exact same beliefs in the 1930s. Would you have recommended we surrender to the Nazis so that no British men died in the war?
Sorry, missed the bit about what’s more important….life is more important mate. Life is more important than getting killed for some fuckwits political desires. There has to be better ways in this day and age than war to over throw a bloke like putin, I hope the sanctions that are in place will prove this.

In the song, Tommy isn't a coward.

The appeasement and turning a blind eye to bullies can only go so far. Otherwise, the Gatlin boys keep raping Becky.
Ah right, soz, my bad. Would agree with the sentiment but did the Gatling boys have a nuclear Arsenal? That’s the issue for me, an unhinged dictator and a nuclear Arsenal. That’s the ultimate game of bluff isn’t it?

A coward eh? Wonder how you’d feel about being in war when everything around you is been Bombed to shit, you’re at risk of dying every day, you’re being conscripted to fight a war you don’t want…..although I suppose there’s a term for folk like you, cannon fodder. I’ll take cowardly every day thank you if it means living a long peaceful life.
If you know the song you will know that he fucked his tormentor big style.

Yes you can. That’s a massive misconception, just because you don’t fight back doesn’t mean you’re weak. Is the loss of life really worth it for saving a bit of dignity? For me, the answer is an absolute no, I’d shit myself in fenwicks window whilst wearing a mag top if it meant saving the lives of my kids, etc.
in other words ,,better to be a live dag than a dead lion

They want them visible so the Russians can roughly gauge what is up there from whom (and roughly infer what else is). It's a de-escalatory tactic. Note that the actual combat aircraft - after all, all those tankers aren't there to refuel nobody - don't have their transponders on. The Russians will still be able to see those on primary radar but won't know exactly what or whose they are.
yep, its the 2+ F-15's or Typhoons with each Rivet Joint or tanker that are the ones you wont see transponding

I don’t think NATO will be drawn in and I don’t think America will. They’ve kept very quiet. Looks to me like nobody wants to get involved and look beaten. It’ll be condemned from all quarters but in reality Putin will have bullied his way to gaining land.

I agree I can’t see Nato getting involved anytime soon unless provoked/forced to through Russia attacking or declaring war on Nato which appears highly unlikely at the moment.

My point is more do we envisage over time that the sanctions imposed on Russia continue to such an extent that it cripples the Russian economy and begins to threaten the west again with nuclear weapons, does the west revert back to trading with Russia? Can all be forgiven by either side?

I only referenced the song because your post echoed the lyrics but the point of the song does stand.

Putin is going to a point where he will leave the West with no option but to f*** him (and Russia) up completely. You can't threaten the world with nukes.

You're right, you can't but by the same token you can't react with nukes or provoke nukes so surely whats happening now with sanctions is the best way forward?
This is class, they nicked a missile, walking down the street with a missile on his shoulder man:lol::lol::lol::lol:

It is 100% best way forward. I don’t think Putin will last much longer. The pressure is going up by the hour. If he holds on to power then Russia will be a nineteenth feudal society within a few years.
