Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

There was a military expert on TV saying that there's some sort of ratio of invaders to population that is generally agreed on as being needed to successfully occupy.

He showed numbers from relatively successful campaigns & they were all well above that. Russia was something like 1:10th of it. Just no way it can happen unless Putin has something up his sleeve like nuclear blackmail.

Exactly. He has enough to get to the centre of Kyiv and claim victory which is his plan. But that’s not success. There is a massive question about what happens then if the military, insurgents and civilian population don’t roll over.

I actually know this.

1 battle tank (4 crew) requires half a standard fuel lorry (so one as you can't cut them in half), a lorry for shells and other ammunition, 2 supply lorries for stuff like tracks and other maintenance gear and a water lorry. So for one tank you're looking at 4 support vehicles.

we had 16 tanks in a squadron, 4 sabre troops of 4 wagons each plus command troop. our support troop had about 4 trucks for fuel, rations, ammunition and other supplies. we also had a reme detachment but i can't remember how many wagons they had, only a few though including recovery vehicles. chuck in one or two land rovers.

we certainly didn't have 64 support trucks for one sabre squadron.

The head of urban warfare the other day from some major institute was saying even if you have a top level attack it’s 5/1 in favour of the defenders in urban warfare.

Particularly with the anti tank and ambush weapons the Ukrainians have you wouldn’t want to be a Russian troop in that convoy rolling down a broad boulevard surrounded by high rises

They may well strike the convoy with drones anyway if they can get close enough
I just wish we didn’t have to know this stuff and I feel guilty when I’m glad when I hear this stuff because I’m a thousand miles away and people are going to die horrific needless deaths.

I agree about desperate people doing desperate things ,also hope and pray that diplomacy can bring the fighting to a stop .
When Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 ,Tom Lehrer said it was “the death of satire “
The same year Kissinger was the main Instigator
of the military coup in Chile .Over the years he has had surporters, but many have branded him a war criminal.
During the Cuban missile Crisis he was not involved
Fair comment, you think of renowned diplomats, Kissingers name trips off the tongue. Whether or not he was a force for good, another subject to have a read about..

Ok then, you give the order and be responsible for the worst atrocity in history 👍 it’s ok you’ll probably have about 2 minutes to ponder over your decision before you’re fried alive with a retaliating warhead heading straight for us and several other countries 👍
Okay we will wait till the mad bastard nukes us. Then at least everyone can moan that Johnson was too hesitant.

Plus, the more you destroy a city the easier it becomes to defend. Stalingrad is the perfect example.

well placed pockets of troops can do untold damage to armour in these settings.

Yep true. This is the daft thing. To be illegal, the user had to have signed a treaty to declare them as illegal. UK etc did, Russia etc didn't.

So if UK used em = illegal
Russia = nasty but not illegal

International law is shite man. Like having to sign up to recognise a speed limit.

It means that Putin won't ever be able to set foot outside of Russia again as he'll be arrested and sent to the Hague for a war crimes trial.

Another layperson question alert:

If he drops nukes on Ukraine, won’t Moscow get the fallout because of wind direction?
Just like when Sweden identified a massive spike in radiation when Chernobyl blew up…

I didn't serve (annoyingly due to injury on selection board) but rtr were my sponsors and for a chally pretty sure I'm not far off. The more vehicles I guess the less support vehicles by virtue of orders of magnitude but that's not factoring in rolling out of a country as an invasion force.

Yep. War drags you down. I must admit being the appalling way the Russians have acted I think well done when you see one of their vehicles wiped out. Forgetting that really those are Human lives being lost who don’t want to be there either
