PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron has asked his Belarus counterpart to demand that the country, Ukraine’s neighbor, quickly order Russian troops to leave, claiming Moscow has been given the green light to deploy nuclear arms there.

In a phone conversation Saturday, Macron denounced “the gravity of a decision that would authorize Russia to deploy nuclear arms on Belarus soil,” a statement by the presidential palace said.

Macron told Alexander Lukashenko that fraternity between the people of Belarus and Ukraine should lead Belarus to “refuse to be a vassal and an accomplice to Russia in the war against Ukraine,” the statement said.

Belarus was one one of several axes used by Russia to launch attacks on Ukraine, with Belarus the point to move toward the capital Kyiv, a senior U.S. defense official has said.

Macron has pushed persistently to try to claw out a ceasefire amid the war, using the telephone to talk to all sides, diplomacy and sanctions by the European Union.

Regional power, not superpower.

Could you imagine the Americans in Ukraine? Put these Russian forces in Scotland against the British and they'd be in the f***ing North Sea by now.
Problem is they have ballistic nuclear missilery that must not be allowed to be shot by a nutcase in his last throws

They're fence sitting so they can keep selling stuff without upsetting anyone. Also as someone else mentioned, a weak Russia might help them..
A weak Russia helps just about everyone. Amazing what the diminution of a massive malefactor can do.

That was ten years ago. The world was a little different in 2012. You know that of course, but you'll never miss a chance to have a dig at Obama
Hang your sorry head man, because the list is endless, and you have zero moral authority to accuse others that mimic your actions. If they are copying you, set a better example.

I'm polite, you are not...I win, but then I'd rather not. Think about some things.

Whilst a small professional standing army usually does much better than a conscripted one you shouldn't forget we're still running some pretty archaic kit. The Challenger 2 is almost 24 years old (although due an upgrade to Mk3) with around 50% mothballed, some of the CVR kit is 50+ years old, and the Warrior is edging 38 years old.

It may be that this conflict gets the government and the army to re-evaluate where the defence budget goes.

This is getting very worrying. Vlad's regime is gonna crumble, the international sanctions will impoverish the nation. Does he want the world to burn with him?

A gas attack, especially if civilian casualties are involved, really would be game changing in terms of western involvement, IMO.
You’ve got to imagine nato will get involved if there is a sniff of nukes and chemical warfare being used.

EDIT: As a caveat to my post #9954

After having read up a little more on NATO - Article 5 is only operative North of the Tropic of Cancer., moreover..
  • on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France (2), on the territory of or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer;
Ukraine of course is North of the Northern Tropic (Tropic of Cancer) however this is moot simply because they aren't members of NATO and Article 5 doesn't apply - Get my point now about the scramble??

Be alright as long as Russia don't invade French Guiana then.
