Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Putin needs to be careful what he wishes for. It’s his actions here that will ultimately persuade these ‘independent’ countries to align with NATO. He’s turning it into us v them scenario where countries will no longer want to remain neutral and he will be surrounded by NATO countries.
It is time to accept that we are facing one of three things
Putin is a genius who has seen/knows something we have all missed missed
He is so desperate because Russia will lose everything in the move to a green worldwide economy
He has gone stark raving mad.
No matter which it is i think this is a dry run for attacking a NATO state which will be a gamble that the good people of say Iowa don't give a fuck about Estonia

I quizzed him on twitter once, not even hostile. Just a counter point to a point he made.

Immediately blocked. By the great debater.
He blocked me years ago, he was kicking off about us training and handing over the control to the Afghan National Army. I told him we invaded so we have a responsibility to leave them in the best condition we can.
He blocked me????

its not the time of place to discuss this as this thread is about current issues, but I have to ask this.

If we refused to help the USA after they had called article 5, you do understand that would have meant we had broken the NATO treaties and the view of an attack on 1 is an attack on all.

Also can you remind me who invaded who first with regards Iraq, you do understand it was the attack on Kuwait that started us down this road, that ended how it did, you also understand it was UN approved the action against Irag.

So my question is, should we have broke our NATO promise and left our allies to it?

I have my own thoughts and misgivings about our past, but this thread is not the time or the place to discuss it, why not start a thread and I will happily debate with you, but for now best we move on and not clog up a very important thread.
I'm happy to call it a day re all the ME stuff on this thread but I respect your reasoned response and happy to move on

india are in putins pocket its been well known for a long time. time to cut all aid to them they spend it on nukes and space programmes and are corrupt as fuck

Things you are wrong about:

India doesn't spend out aid on nukes and space programmes, British aid is crucial part of British soft power. We have given up too much soft power already in a violent and dangerous world

Things you are right about:

India is part of a group of authoritarian regimes who want to undermine Western democracy to legitimise their own illberal rule (I am paraphrasing here)

We should end our aid to them immediately

They've been living next to the angry neighbour for a long time, not making too much noise.
They even stop tourists taking pictures of Russian border posts from inside Finland, cos they don't want to annoy them.

Turns out the angry neighbour is still likely to kick their door in, so why not consider joining NATO?
So they’re telling Russia that they need to invade them now or never.
We’ve set the bench mark, if you aren’t in NATO we will send supplies (500 German helmets) but other than that, you’re fair game to Russia

I think it would be a lot different if it was a NATO country. However there’s very little stopping him invade every non NATO country.

Russia are simply doing what Britain have done for most of our history, including over the past decade- securing their own political and strategic interests. It's what Imperial countries do.

I have no moral difficulty in pointing out that what Russia is doing is morally unjustifiable because I maintain its true whoever does it, including thr UK.

But the UK's greatest national myth is basically that we were the good type of invader, coloniser, and that the millions of deaths and the reourposing of other people's wealth and people without permission that we orchestrated was basically fine.

As long as that myth holds true, we have basically no leg to stand on in situations like this. Either these things are acceptable, or they're not. If they're not, then Britain isn't an exception.
Looking forward to Ukraine voluntarily joining and participating in a commonwealth with Russia, and happily keeping Putin as head of state decades after Russia leave.

No,

it’s goodies v baddies because people like you can spout your drivel here without fear of a on knock on the door by security services, whilst anti-war protestors in the aggressor nation are currently being rounded up en masse and put in prisons and camps by way of summary justice.

It’s goodies vs baddies because if you disagree with what your govt does, you can vote against them and have your vote counted, or even stand for election against them without fear of your food being laced with something. A luxury those who live under the “baddies” don’t have.

Read the room. If your going to try and spout some pseudo-intellectual self-flagellating, historically illiterate bollocks, then this really isn’t the time or place.
Put that particular self-hating poster on ignore because he often derails threads but this is a great post, spot on.
