Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Just out of curiosity,

Who would stay, stand firm and fight?

Who on the other hand would say that they are not fighting for the likes of Reece-Mog, Duncan-Smith etc?

I would be in two minds as I hate people like R-M and D-S and all they stand for. However, in the end I think I'd stay and go Full Tonto!

which is probably why we are sending forces to Poland/Lithuania/Estonia for example.

Others need to step up
You do realise that there are plenty of troops from other NATO members in those countries too? You make it sound like the UK are going above and beyond here, which there is very little evidence to back up, to be honest. We all need to step up, and you need to stop trying to deflect the blame solely onto other countries. Especially when our own government is so twisted together with Russian money itself and unwilling to genuinely tackle that. And moving troops around within NATO countries is no great shakes TBH.

There was a very interesting interview on BBC Today this morning saying that CPS couldn't go after money laundering oligarchs because the Government has cut the CPS budget to the bone. As a result the oligarchs just throw money at their defence and the CPS gives up. Can't think why this Government would allow that to happen.

Coal power stations are mainly demolished.

It takes 10 years to build a nuclear power station (and currently less than 30% of concept power stations make it to construction)
Wouldn’t get a nuclear station built in 10 years in this country. Would take longer than that just to setup the site and sort out the licences. The talk in Cumbria was of a 40-45 year new build programme

They are demolished and where will we get the coal from
ceased operations in late 2015. In 2016, three power stations closed at , and . closed in 2018 and was granted consent to convert into a gas fired power station. power station converted to in 2018 and is being converted to an plant. and shut down operations in 2019, closed in 2020 and stopped burning coal in March 2021.

I would imagine it wouldn't take more than a year to get a fair number of those back up and running if needed?

I'm no fan of coal, but we need to have energy security. I'd also lash solar panels on every factory roof in the country personally. And as I've said, we should be relying on nuclear far more than Russian gas and middle east oil.

Edit - Yep, looks like they're all knocked down, pretty much. Ohwell.

Hopefully this seeds people desire to chance, I won't hold my breath, palms are always greased at decision level.
Russia are simply doing what Britain have done for most of our history, including over the past decade- securing their own political and strategic interests. It's what Imperial countries do.

I have no moral difficulty in pointing out that what Russia is doing is morally unjustifiable because I maintain its true whoever does it, including thr UK.

But the UK's greatest national myth is basically that we were the good type of invader, coloniser, and that the millions of deaths and the reourposing of other people's wealth and people without permission that we orchestrated was basically fine.

As long as that myth holds true, we have basically no leg to stand on in situations like this. Either these things are acceptable, or they're not. If they're not, then Britain isn't an exception.
