I'm sure you already know all this but, flying low is also a tactic to avoid radar. They can fly a lot faster at low altitude too, to avoid any fire. They were releasing flares to throw off any missiles as well.

Shame they didn't meet any MANPADs or anything to that effect. They look like old Mi8's.
