Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Boris making a national speech at 5pm.

Unless he can convince NATO to push Russia back I don't care what he says.

NATO can’t push back, that’s not its remit, it’s purely to defend its member, Ukraine is not a member

A coalition would have to be formed and I can’t see that happening

Ukraine saying they're pushing Russian forces back and the attacks haven't weakened them... Russia saying this is total bullshit.
I think we are going to see a lot of propaganda from both countries. none are going to admit the truth especially if they have lost a battle.

It will be difficult to tell unless people know of impartial commentators? Not entirely sure i will want to know mind.

WatchedRT for an hour. They are saying Putin was asked by Donbas for assistance due to genocide by Ukraine.
They’re saying Ukraine are deserting en masse and that they’re desperate.
Also reporting that there’s no evidence of any jets being shot down and Russia are liberating the region.
They’re saying water and power have been cut off to Donetsk villages by Ukraine and the peoples militia are fighting against Ukraine forcing them to retreat.
Neo nazi Ukraine are apparently stopping villagers from evacuating and using them as human shields.
Ukraine are shelling villages in Donetsk causing mass civilian casualties.

Before all this there was a half hour report which was basically an advert for their army saying how much of a good and rewarding job it is and how one soldier couldn’t wait to get sent on another tour.

It was already too late once Putin took over.

The opportunity to have friendly relations with Russia was at the end of the cold war.

We left them broken, poor and humiliated.

It's kind of like the difference, less extreme obviously, to how we treat Germany at the end of WW1 compared to the end of WW2.

The situation in Russia in the 90s meant it was somewhat inevitable that they would end up with some form of nationalist gangster regime, much like the situation in Germany at the end of WW1.

We should have done what we could to avoid that, much as we did with Germany after WW2.
Absolutely brilliant summation of the situation and exactly how I see it including the references to WWI and WWII. We have failed enormously on the diplomatic front here and now we are paying the price.

Surely it should be the other way around

Depends what he says, if it’s just a “we’ve got sanctions ready” type statement it’s fine bput if he details action that’s beings taken you’re correct

The west has screwed this up, Putin has used the Hitler play book to perfection.

Get rid of anyone inside Russia that could stand up to him, test the water in the the years before today to see how the west reacts, attack another country under the pretence of "helping the Russian speaking folk, get a puppet state to fight alongside him. He has well and truly put the ball in our court with either we Help the Ukraine or we have to back down, he is banking on us backing down.

Hitler said he was amazed at how easy time and time again, we give him what he wanted, couldn't believe we didn't intervene, i think we have seen exactly the same with Putin, if we had showed some balls and NATO threated a hard response no way he would have attacked all of Ukraine, like its seems he has now, he may have tested the waters by helping the repels, but this is out there now, you cant disguise what this is. I think thats why we had a couple of days of him seeing our next move, moving a few troops into rebel controlled land, testing our responses all the time, which was to sanction a couple of people, that give him the green light.

No idea what we should do now, my heart says NATO needs to defend Ukraine to nip this in the bud now, my head cant get around what this could mean, is he crazy enough to use nukes? The time to stop this was weeks ago before shots were fired, gutted for the poor people of Ukraine, my heart goes out to them.
I don’t think he is crazy enough to use nukes. It would inevitably lead to Russia being absolutely levelled by the US, UK and France. It would also mean the end of life on this planet as know it.

There is merit in that sentiment but this is on Putin.
He's crossed the line, that's unarguable.

It still remains a failure of diplomacy and that come as no great surprise to me given the quality of leaders we've had in the West the last few decades and the decline in the diplomatic service.
