Interesting call re Borthwick.Looked good against India. He bats at 3, so would Borthwick open?

Doesn’t look a bad top 5 for the start of the season
We might be losing Lees to England for a lot of the summer, KP is here to replace Burnham.Looked good against India. He bats at 3, so would Borthwick open?

That completely passed me by.Yeah Bancroft told last season Durham wouldn't be re-signing him.
Looks like KP has played a few seasons club cricket over here so had an idea about English wickets now for the Riverside.
Borthwick's batting was pretty ropey last season. I don't think he's good enough to play 3 any more, never mind open. I'd drop him down the order to six.Fantastic signing. Delighted with this.
Going to be an interesting lineup either way.
Michael Jones batted well towards the end of the season, could well be that it’s him and A.N.Other to start the season opening if there’s a cross over with Lees. I know in theory he shouldn’t miss any cricket, but it depends how much he plays in WI I suppose.
Borthwick has always seemed to want to cling onto the 3, but it probably would suit everyone else if he opened.

Don’t think it’s right to write the lad off after one bad summer.
He’s been a number 3 since he established himself in the side, scored thousands of runs and attracted interest from Surrey, for whom he generally also batted 3 in a side that often contained Hashim Amla. He’s also the club captain.
I’d be hugely surprised if he dropped down to 6.
I'm loathe to criticise Badger because he's such a whole hearted guy but the best way for him to regain his batting form is to relieve him of the captaincy and tell him to forget about his bowling. If we use a spinner, he needs to be economical; leg spinners aren't. His captaincy left a lot to be desired and definitely affected his batting i.m.o.His averages since he first left in 2016:
2017: 24.8
2018: 40.4
2019: 30.6
2020: 19.0
2021: 23.7
Bit more than 'one bad summer'. I'd argue his value to the team is increasingly as an all-rounder.

Club statement said he would play 7 games until Worcestershire in June, so that reads like he will be here for second game of the season.I'm loathe to criticise Badger because he's such a whole hearted guy but the best way for him to regain his batting form is to relieve him of the captaincy and tell him to forget about his bowling. There's always a catch with Durham's overseas signings. S. Affers are playing a 2 test series v Bangladesh ending 12th April. If selected would miss 1st 2 Durham games and possibly 3rd commencing 21st April.
Yes, but a rather optimistic schedule- 2 days between test in Port Elizabeth to C C at Riverside.Club statement said he would play 7 games until Worcestershire in June, so that reads like he will be here for second game of the season.

Evidence: "trust me marra".Borthwick will be fine.
They will no doubt stick with him at three. I wouldn't move a batter struggling for form up the order either. I thought he looked better when free to play shots in the RLC which is why I'd be tempted to move him down to five or six. Remember, Dickson was signed as an opener but has reinvented himself as a middle order batsman and white ball slogger.didn't realise things have got that bad like. i wouldn't move him to open definitely not, but i wouldn't drop him down either. i remember campaingning for jennings to be moved into the middle order since he struggled to open so badly before the season he scored 1700 runs
