Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Because it is taking the piss to hold exercises off the Irish coast. Why not hold them mid Atlantic. Would Russia tolerate nuclear armed American subs as part of an American fleet operating drills just off the Crimean coast? It was intimidating while at the same time Putin was rattling his nukes. It got the expected response.

The second part of your question is irrelevant as what I have said is in response to a perceived fear by Putin of NATO being embedded in NATO countries that border Russia when at the same time he moves larger battle groups into Belarus which borders NATO countries. Then again I never could see any reason why NATO was involved in Afghanistan. The troops based in South Korea are a remnant of the Korean War and with the nutter of North Korea who could criticise that. The two Koreas are still officially at war.

I fully understand the Russia-Belarus-Ukraine relationships that historically began centuries before the Soviet Era. I doubt very much whether NATO would have any intention of invading Russia.
All that tells me is that you’re drawn into the narrative from the propaganda you read and watch from one side of a complex situation all day every day.

Have you ever considered looking at these things from a wider perspective?

We clearly won’t but let’s not forget it’s not even 30 years since us and the US signed an agreement that we would protect Ukraine if it gave up its nuclear weapons.

Another example of the West being poor to our word and we wonder why all and sundry and proliferating arms and weapons of mass destruction

Another geography expert. Last time I looked Germany was west of Russia.

Hitler’s hordes included Romanians, Spaniards, Italians, Swedes, French, Croatians, Norwegians, Danes and Belgians...the scrapings of Europe in the murderous Waffen SS.
you forgot to add the British Free Corps, they pledged their lives in the common European struggle against Soviet Russia, mind I am not sure they fought in Russia but more likely used in the defence of Germany.

Stupid question 1:

What exactly does Putin want with Ukraine anyway?

Strategic importance? Does it have wealth? What does he do afterwards?
As a geography student I’m only partially qualified in geopolitics, but I’d say he’s more likely to be making a public display of Russia’s strength in protecting their western border. He panicked with the Baltics aligning with the EU and would definitely ensure that Ukraine is ran by a Kremlin-sympathetic leader. He definitely did this with Belarus back in the 90s, and I’m sure he did this with Poland and Hungary, manipulation of their elections resulting in the election of far right scum like Orban and Duda, which destabilised the EU and also gave him a couple of puppets for further damage. Not only would this strengthen further their own border with the EU and NATO, but he’d also likely ensure that Russia “protects” Ukraine so long as Russia can have a large naval base on the Black Sea. They massively lack a large warm water port so this would be ideal for Putin for export and military purposes. It would also explain why he’s been cosying up with Erdogan, so that Russia has no issues entering the Mediterranean via the Bosphorus Strait. I personally don’t think this will result in annexation of Ukraine, though they have some nice agricultural land there’s not much else to gain other than more people to struggle with feeding. All IMO of course!

He doesn't want Ukraine, there are two key issues motivating Russia.

The first is settling the civil war in Ukraine which people forget is on temporary hold pending conclusion of the Minsk II agreement brokered by Germany and France with Ukraine
The second and even more problematic is the demand that NATO stops expanding into Eastern Europe and neighbouring Stans.

Historically strong links to Russia, and lots of Russians living there.
Disrupted by EU attempts to expand eastwards, and EU's subsequent support for the military coup against the democratically elected pro-Russia government. Putin finally put his foot down.

Certainly puts to bed the argument that the EU has maintained peace in Europe - they've actually pushed us to the brink of war

War would not be good for most ordinary people. Profits to be made for others though.

Not sure Ukraine would be a pushover for Putin mind, but no expert admittedly.
