Could we lose a generation of supporters to the Mags?

My parents weren't into footy, but they were both from Newcastle and all of their families are black and white.

I started following Sunderland because despite being born in Newcastle and then living in Felling for a couple of years we moved to County Durham. At school in Sacriston (pre 1992) it was 50:50 mags to mackems. The group of friends I was knocking around with started going to Roker Park on the bus from Witton Gilbert. So from 1988 until 1996 when I moved from the area I think I missed 3 home games due to when I was away on family holidays. But it could have been so different. I could have been a filthy mag if I'd started going to St James' Park regularly (I think I went 3 times) with the other lot of friends I knocked about with.

Bizarrely, thinking about where either of us could have ended up in this country or even the world, one of those mags lives 3 miles away in the next village and we are close friends. Known each other for 38 years.
 

For sure we’re a big fish in a small pool. And for sure the Mags will be top and above candidates if not next season in 2 years time. Accept it it’s the way it is!

The sad and disconcerting point to consider is this - over the next 5 years or so do we risk losing a generation of younger fans to the Mags? Unfortunately I would say this is a real possibility.

We probably already lost them, I go and watch my neices son training and there's loads of kids knocking about in mag tops since they got the money.

It was never like that before the money came in.

That school in Segga, will always have a place in my heart. Spent 9 years there, after 1992. Pity it closed, it was home for nearly ten years.

Totally agree. I did not choose Newcastle. I went because my uncle did thus, at 10 years old, if i wanted to go i went with him. If he had been Sunderland then that is where i would have gone.

I’m Sunlun, those before me were and I’ve made sure my kids are, they’ll bring their bairns up proper! We’ll never be mastered by black and white bastards!

Anyone who’s Sunlun should bring their children up in the right way or any turncoat is scum.

Wasn't sure it was that bad (though did witness people switch to them at school) just when the stadium opened it didn't look like it had effected us too badly, if it had opened a few years early in the middle of the Keegan-era I don't think gates would have been much different.

They're more likely to win back the fans that we've both lost to Man City, Chelsea and other things than football. and pick up casual glory hunters around the country (and even world) which is going to make it unfathomable to compete with them even if we had full houses, that's what galls me.
